Having a sovereign conference, where the rank and file of the party can submit policies without having them subject to bureaucratic stitch-ups or obfuscatory composites, and then policies the conference votes for actually become party policy and are implemented in government...
...rather than policies being made up and announced unilaterally by ministers or having conference debates undermined by statements from the NEC or leader’s office issued right before they’re due to take place...
...is just such basic, 101 stuff in terms of party democracy and empowering the membership. It’s a scandal how poor “Corbynism” has been on this stuff so far. #Lab19 #LabourConference2019

The “SCOOP: @OmarSalem is actually a Labour activist!” angle is obviously ghoulish as it implies some kind of surreptition or duplicity (like, he was only *posing* as a father caring for his sick child, when he was really a Labour activist in disguise)... (1/3)
...but it’s also a further indication of the depoliticisation of public discourse. It suggests that “member of the public” and “political activist” are mutually exclusive categories, and that to be an authentic “public voice”, you have to be above or outside politics. (2/3)
In fact, our politics and our public culture in general would be much healthier if many more people were political activists, connecting politics to material experience rather than a conception whereby it’s something technocratic specialists do to or for “ordinary people”. (3/3)

Good article.
A lot of attention has been given to Dempsey’s comments that Robinson supporters are “right to hate the liberal left”. In the same speech, he also said “too many in Labour” were “calculating” that they could rely on the votes of “ethnic minorities, in alliance with liberals”...
...to get into power, and that was why Labour had turned away from “the working class”. This explicitly frames “ethnic minorities” and “the working class” as two separate, and potentially conflicted, interest groups. It’s impossible to overstate how dangerous this notion is.

Really don’t get the folks going “Netanyahu’s annexation plans show why a two-state settlement is impossible”. The logic seems to be, it’s impossible because Netanyahu doesn’t want to concede it. But you think he’s gonna concede a unitary or binational single state instead?
It’s true that if the annexation takes place, and isn’t quickly reversed, then the material basis for an independent Palestinian state could be completely atomised. If that happens it’ll be a historic tragedy and defeat for Palestinian self-determination...
...which makes the crowing about it from people who, for entirely separate reasons, have always opposed a two-state settlement, a bit unseemly. Like, “aha, I told you it was impossible!” Meanwhile, the Palestinians remain subjugated.

Rank-and-file economists don't know it yet, but the next president-elect of the American Economic Association has been selected.

Or at least the only individual whose name will be printed on the ballot has been selected.

Here's the story, #econtwitter...
AEA by-laws charge a nominating committee with presenting 2+ candidates for president-elect to the Executive Committee no later than April 30th. The 2 committees then hold what resembles a papal conclave, trading the Sistine Chapel for a meeting room at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.
In about a year, the minutes of that meeting will be published in the AER.

We can tell the meeting has happened thanks to this week's press release on association award recipients. Those decisions are made at the same meeting.

Being a Jewish member of @UKLabour was once a source of pride for me, but as with many in my position it is now a badge of shame. The election of Peter Willsman to the NEC, with 70000+ votes, is the end for me.
A word on me: I didn't oppose Corbyn in 2015 (placed him 2nd on my ballot), and I work actively for justice for Palestinians and for security and civility for all in I-P at huge personal expense.
Where the Jewish community has attacked me - I've experienced threats and abuse to me and my employers - I have sought solidarity and support in progressive circles and in Labour.

1/ This exchange confirms what I've been saying about the IG and the difficulty he's had with highly sensitive information.
2/ The senator asks him whether his classified index includes an email between Loretta Lynch and @AmandaRenteria. The IG says yes but the email refers to information that is classified at such a high level that it even limits the members who can see it.
3/ I suspect this is IG-speak for Special Access Programs. This is information that is above top secret. The mere possession of it without authorization is treason.
