Really don’t get the folks going “Netanyahu’s annexation plans show why a two-state settlement is impossible”. The logic seems to be, it’s impossible because Netanyahu doesn’t want to concede it. But you think he’s gonna concede a unitary or binational single state instead?
It’s true that if the annexation takes place, and isn’t quickly reversed, then the material basis for an independent Palestinian state could be completely atomised. If that happens it’ll be a historic tragedy and defeat for Palestinian self-determination...
...which makes the crowing about it from people who, for entirely separate reasons, have always opposed a two-state settlement, a bit unseemly. Like, “aha, I told you it was impossible!” Meanwhile, the Palestinians remain subjugated.
All social progress is “impossible” at some point in its history, until it’s not. What’s required is a social upheaval - amongst Palestinians but also, crucially, within Israel itself - against Netanyahu, against the occupation, and for equal national rights.
There is only one “one state solution” on offer right now: Netanyahu’s “Greater Israel”, where the best the Palestinians can hope for is perpetual dispossession, oppression, and disenfranchisement, and the worst is actual ethnic cleansing.
There are two national communities in I/P, the only consistently democratic settlement is one that affords them both an equal right to self-determination. We should focus our energies on making solidarity with groups fighting for that on the ground, such as @omdimbeyachad.
