As an Indian American, today's #HowdyModi/Trump rally feels absurd

Why celebrate someone trying to deport 500k Indians from the US, and kill #H4EAD, which allowed ~100k Indian women to work legally?

But here's the weirdest part…

Indian American kids get bullied every single fucking day.

"T*rrorist"
"Cam*ljockey"
"Sand n*gger"
"Os*ma"
"T*welhead"
"Sh*t-skinned"
"R*ghead"
"Curry m*nkey"

The list goes on and on.

And it's been getting worse.

Because of Trumpism.

There are lots of reasons why someone might disagree with Modi—civil liberties, environment, anti-minority politics, press, Kashmir…

But put that aside for a minute

The dude literally hugged the man inspiring violence against our children

Indian Americans normalizing Trump really need to talk to their kids.

Because pretty much every single young Indian American will state the obvious:

Trump accelerates bullying.

Trumpism accelerates bullying.

I've seen the narrative, often from recent immigrants, that when Trump praises Indian leaders like Modi, that means Indian Americans will also be safer, wealthier, more respected.

There's a certain kind of tragic naiveté in that story…

Indian American immigrants aren't taught US history. Nobody hands you an ethnic studies textbook as you get off a plane.

Nobody tells you that when Modi and his employees embrace White supremacists, they're putting *your* kids in danger…

This is something Muslim and Sikhs get much more clearly than Hindus.

If you're literally on the frontlines of American xenophobia, the stakes are more clear.

It's more obvious who's trying to protect, or to harm, your children.

Listen to the kids. They know what's up.

Every time Modi hugs Trump, we're fueling the fire that will burn our children.

Every time Indian Americans fuel White nationalism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, we put *our* people in harm's way.

I'm influenced by Sasha W's "selfish solidarity"—the idea that acts of solidarity might also serve our own interests

There are so many reasons to say #AdiosModi #AdiosTrump.

But if nothing else, say it to protect our own skin and that of our children

There's a lot about the history of race in America that immigrants aren't told.

Here's a thread on the history of South Asians and African Americans that every immigrant should read👇🏽
