(1/9) I was unable to share my thoughts on #HLMUHC #UNGA on day of, but will do so with tweetorial below & my @nytimes commentary "Reversal in Health Coverage": nytimes.com/2019/09/24/opi…

I also want to thank everyone for warm words of support: my mother is doing better day by day.
(2/9) It’s been a landmark event as #HLMUHC moved mountains with political attention for #Health4All #UHC and the adoption of the Political Declaration. As per my op-ed for @ghn_news, reduced financial commitment but inclusion of #SurgeryUHC now apparent:

(3/9) Major congratulations for the important #ChildHealth event by @Smiletrain et al.: “quality surgical care is a driver & outcome of development” #SurgeryUHC

1.7 BILLION CHILDREN live without access to surgery. #UNGA #UNGA74, what about that future? qz.com/1674518/theres…
(4/9) Thankful for @UHC2030 @CSOs4UHC to include our #GlobalSurgery statement earlier this year during the Multistakeholder Hearing for civil society, and having chance to represent @HarvardPGSSC. August draft and now final Declaration include #SurgeryUHC, which is a great feat.
(5/9) Skepticism remains about implementation of the Declaration. Putting down words, sending out tweets, and discussing on panels is one; leveraging this into action is another. It is exactly that which will make or break this movement by 2030. #UNGA

(6/9) Road to #UHC is long:

❖ Half of world lacks 1+ essential health service
❖ Five billion lack safe surgical, obstetric, anesthesia care
❖ Hundreds of millions experience financial catastrophe to pay for health care

This is problematic around the world, even in US. #UNGA
(7/9) In fact, NOT investing in surgical, obstetric, anesthesia care is WORSE: without scaling surgical services, low- and middle-income countries are projected a loss of economic growth of 12.3 TRILLION DOLLARS by 2030. I’ll let you count the zeroes in that, #UNGA. #SurgeryUHC
(8/9) Countries nevertheless are able to fund UHC systems, including comprehensive surgical services. All that is lacking is a political will and commitment - will the Declaration change this or go on the shelves again?

(9/9) To close: #UNGA74 lasts 14 days. Every two seconds someone dies due to lack of #SafeSurgery.

During #UNGA, over 600,000 people will have died from surgically treatable conditions.

Few, if any, are policymakers; do other HUMAN BEINGS not deserve this attention?
