Why are we launching the #MyHealthBooklet?

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be better achieved when like minds decide to spring up actions (little by little) to improve health; these micro actions can
then meet up at a center to birth a sustainable result.
In line with the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal (Good health and well-being) we collated this
easy-to-understand and accessible health booklet "especially" for those at the bottom of the Pyramid with little to no access to the internet.
We observed that with all problems of health being corrected across social media platforms, majority do not get to those who are met daily in buses, on the streets and convinced on reasons to buy wrong medications and dangerous prescriptions that endanger their health.

(1/9) I was unable to share my thoughts on #HLMUHC #UNGA on day of, but will do so with tweetorial below & my @nytimes commentary "Reversal in Health Coverage": nytimes.com/2019/09/24/opi…

I also want to thank everyone for warm words of support: my mother is doing better day by day.
(2/9) It’s been a landmark event as #HLMUHC moved mountains with political attention for #Health4All #UHC and the adoption of the Political Declaration. As per my op-ed for @ghn_news, reduced financial commitment but inclusion of #SurgeryUHC now apparent:

globalhealthnow.org/2019-09/cuttin…
(3/9) Major congratulations for the important #ChildHealth event by @Smiletrain et al.: “quality surgical care is a driver & outcome of development” #SurgeryUHC

1.7 BILLION CHILDREN live without access to surgery. #UNGA #UNGA74, what about that future? qz.com/1674518/theres…

New in @socscimed: We study the impact of IMF structural adjustment programs on health in developing countries; w/ T Forster, @thomstubbs, L King

In short: IMF programs increase neonatal mortality & lower access to health systems.

THREAD.

Open-access: doi.org/10.1016/j.socs…
International organizations are broadcasting their commitment to aiding #SDG attainment. But might their actual policy advice hurt progress towards these goals? We look at the case of the #IMF.

2/9
IMF structural adjustment programs—mandating austerity, deregulation, liberalization, & privatization—have been the workhorse of neoliberal globalization. For the history of such policies, see here:

Why healthcare is incapable of reducing its own costs:
A tutorial system analysis
#M4A #UHC #healthcare #healthcarecosts @ASlavitt @boltyboy #futurist imaginewhatif.com #healthcaredebate #healthforall
2/26
The health insurance industry's hired guns cry that Medicare For All (or any universal healthcare) would "crash the system" and "destroy healthcare as we know it."

They say that like it's a bad thing.
3/26
They say we should trust them and their cost-cutting efforts to bring all Americans more affordable health care.

We should not trust them, because the system as it is currently structured economically is incapable of reducing costs.

Why?

#GlobalHealth friends: I wanted to share how some of your HIC institutions are responsible for some brain drain and poor healthcare in LMICs. This month our hospital in Kenya has been hit again, and I wanted to share what that actually means.

1/ THREAD
2/ This month we are losing another nurse to a HIC (the US). Trained in our nursing school, then the wards, then critical care, then management, this nurse has been mentored from student to leader over 10+ years - is skilled; has IQ/EQ & is a huge asset.
3/ The US has decided to sponsor a visa for him as an area of need. I guess because there is a nurse shortage. The US has 10 nurses per 1000 people. Kenya has 1.6. So by sponsoring his nurse visa, it is saying, the US need is greater than someone else’s.

I am one of 17M Americans with #cancer right now.
Some of us will survive, some will not.
Our survival should not be predicated on our health insurance.
#M4A is an imperative step toward universal coverage and keeping us all living as long as possible.
#TuesdayMotivation
Every candidate must support #UniversalHealthCoverage. Access to care is the single most important issue for all Americans regardless of party. EVERYONE has a family member who's sick: parent, spouse, child. No one should face bankruptcy to care for a loved one.
#Campaign2020
2/
My father's final illness bankrupted me. I got sick soon after. This is a common story. But unlike our peers in Canada, UK, France or Germany, we have no recourse but to accrue massive hospital bills and risk losing everything to care for a sick loved me.
#M4A is a promise.

The @CSO4UHC is calling on #HLMUHC to commit govts to move from private, voluntary, out-of-pocket payments towards public financing with minimum 5% of GDP as govt health spending. Here’s why. #UHC4Me 1/7
World Health Report 2010 by @WHO showed that only when direct payments fall to 15–20% of total health expenditure that incidence of financial catastrophe and impoverishment falls to negligible levels. 2/7
World Health Report 2010 also showed that governments which ensure access to a set of services usually spend 5–6% of GDP as government health expenditure. 3/7

I think the real question is "how do we create the means and foundation for the agenda," not the money to pay for it.

We always get money by taxing working class and middle class people.
That's how we pay for the two wars we've been in for over 15yrs.
The #healthcare industry employs millions of Americans.
In the only vision Bernie Sanders has ever presented, that somehow disappears and is replaced by something completely different....by magic. He has never had a plan for it or "breaking up the banks."
nydailynews.com/opinion/transc…
The most workable--and quick--plan we could get (if people vote in November and the Democrats regain the House)--is the #MedicareExtraForAll plan.

Getting people to give up their employer-paid insurance will be hard, but this could convince everyone.

I had another life-threatening heart/lung episode today.
I'm not sure how much of it had to do with my cutting my heart meds back to once a day while appealing the increased price by my health insurance from $120 for 60 pills to $1k for 60 pills.
We had to call 9/11.
Scary.
1/
I couldn't afford to go to the hospital--when you call 9/11 the city charges you $1,200 for the trip to nearest hospital.
They only accept cash.
The EMTs checked me out, told me to take the heart meds the way they were prescribed, established I wasn't in VFib, just SVT AFib.
2/
So all day, instead of doing work that needs to be done, I have been trying to get my heart rate under 140, which given my lung meds increase my heart rate, has been more work: breathing exercises my PT taught me, single nostril breathing @HillaryClinton taught me (try it).

Trump's admin has made life exceedingly difficult for people like me who are fighting #cancer & dealing with extreme medical costs.

Obama said in 2009 that he hated watching his mother forced to work to pay bills as she fought for her life.

Many of us are still doing this.
Now Trump wants to make yet another critic of #ACA--the only buffer sick & #disabled Americans have until we get #UHC--head of HHS.

#AlexAzar is an actual lobbyist for #BigPharma.
And cut his legal teeth--he's a lawyer--working for #KenStarr investigating the Clintons.
Anyone who thinks sick/#disabled people are going to get a fair shake under this presidency aren't thinking clearly. And while I know we have more Russia news and
more sexual abuse claims today, this appointment impacts EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN WHO IS NOT RICH and it's barely news.
