The NHS-Galleri™ #screening trial is a proper #RCT, which means half of the 140,000 participants WON'T be tested (certainly not in the initial phase) and NONE will be told whether they have been #tested or not.

In RCTs, we compare the outcome in the treatment and the control group. When everyone in the treatment receives the treatment in full or (comply), trial arm assignment is enough to estimate the effect of the intervention. We call this "intention-to-treat" (ITT). /2
The problem is that some participants may not receive the treatment in full or comply with all the requirements of the intervention itself. This produces bias in the ITT estimate, "diluting" the effect of the intervention, which is why we need to account for noncompliance. /3

Why did we do this study? Azithromycin was identified early on as a potential candidate for COVID (+/- HCQ). Although it’s relatively safe, antibiotic use causes antibiotic resistance, and unnecessary widespread use of an antibiotic is a bad call. We need to know if it works. 2/n
There were some reasons to think it MIGHT work: azithromycin has anti-inflammatory properties and is used in other pulmonary diseases to reduce inflammation and has some in vitro anti-viral properties. But that doesn’t necessarily translate to efficacy, so we need a trial. 3/n
