Yesterday the NY Times ran a “swing voters don’t want impeachment” story — based mostly on diehard Trumpers.

Today they’re doxxing the whistleblower.

What the hell’s going on over there?
The problem is that this all fits into a consistent pattern from the Times. Some of the highlights-

Then there’s their unwillingness to call Trump what he is, an authoritarian. (The judges will also accept “fascist”.) Of course, that’s true of all mainstream news, but the Times is supposed to have a higher standard.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to cover Trump’s authoritarianism. Here are two examples.
Richard Engle calls it what it is, and describes some of the tactics.

Not complicated, but Engle deserves a lot of credit for this.
This article describes the tactics too - accusing Democrats of a coup and treason, talk of civil war and fake news - but never calls it what it is. Not one use of the word ‘authoritarian’ or its synonyms.

I wonder if Barr considered that a suggestion, a hint, or an inference.
Trump publicly accused U.S. allies of faking the Trump-Russia scandal, in order to pressure them into helping his AG manufacture evidence of a “hoax”.

Now we know Barr was in on it.

This is the third article today about the muddled message from Dem leaders.

It's actually very simple:

#Pelosi has no intention of impeaching Trump.

#Nadler was fine with that. Until @LindseyBoylan, a serious challenger, came along...
@LindseyBoylan So @RepJerryNadler has managed to hide behind @SpeakerPelosi and blame her for slow-walking #impeachment.

But for months, he was downplaying #impeachment ... before he got a serious challenger.
@LindseyBoylan @RepJerryNadler @SpeakerPelosi In the end, #Nadler is trying to keep his seat, so he's playing politics with his most sacred duty as a representative, to protect the Constitution.

And he's doing it by pushing what I call "Schrödinger's impeachment" -- an impeachment inquiry that isn't really one.

Donald Trump's entire presidency is an impeachable offense, an affront to basic human values, an insult to common sense and common decency, a threat to the rule of law.

2. As with most issues before Congress, substance and politics are closely related but distinguishable. As to substance, the argument -- persuasive to me -- is that obstruction of justice, contacts with Russians seeking to influence a US election, corruption and the rest...
3...will do mortal damage to American democracy if tolerated. Not proceeding toward impeachment proceedings means tolerating all of these things, though it is possible to deceive oneself on that point. The political argument @NateSilver538 makes is about American voters.
