The point wasn't that they should also cancel the reporter, but that they should stop trying to dig up old tweets to cancel people.

What about the editors who approved the original piece? Guessing they have some questionable old social media posts....

At what point will they get the actual message?
What should have happened is a suspensions of the editors. That should have been followed by a statement saying they screwed up, demonstrating they understand what the screwup was, and making it clear they would not allow it to happen again.
