I wonder how all those Indian cricket pundits, who have lionized the great leadership of Imran Khan on the cricket field, are reacting to their icon's remarkable meltdown over the past few months

Imran Khan worshippers like Sanjay Manjrekar, Ravi Shastri come to mind
When I was growing up in the 90s, Imran Khan worship was so widespread among the cricketing fraternity, that it was almost a universal cult

Khan was lionized as this great Pathan who united an unruly bunch of cricketers

A "natural" leader so to speak
Perhaps he was

But his terrible show as a statesman shows there is a world of a difference between leading 11 young testosterone-charged men on a cricket field and representing a state of 200 million on the world stage

In the Islamic world and in India, there is often talk of recovering lost ground

E.g Islamic fantasy of recapturing Delhi
Hindu ambition to reunite subcontinent

In Europe, the urge to reconquer lost territories of Christendom (N Africa,Turkey,Levant) is totally missing!
Christian missionaries today have a very strong focus in regions alien to "traditional" Christendom - Sub-saharan Africa, China, India

But there isn't a civilizational urge within Europe to get back the territories that were once part of the "West" - part of Greco-Roman culture
E.g. North Africa, the Berber zone, was after all home to St Augustine

Egypt was home to Ptolemy

What is Turkey today was home to numerous Eastern Greeks - perhaps Homer himself!

We should not link personal habits/morality with interpretation of scripture

Nearly all commentators on Brahma Sutra (including Shankara and Ramanuja) defended animal sacrifice in the limited context of a Vedic Yajna

Though it is v v likely Shankara / Ramanuja were vegetarians
There is no doubt that an ethical argument against animal sacrifice has animated the HIndu world for at least 2500 years

And that ethical argument did not always merely stem from the two nAstika maThas, but often from within the Astika fold
While this ethical argument did have an impact of making animal sacrifice less frequent and less prevalent (outside of the Shakta traditions), it was never positioned as a repudiation of the Vedic scripture

A factoid from David Reich (regret picking him up so late)

Almost every non-African has some Neanderthal ancestry (max 2%)

0% in sub-saharan Africa

Yet though Neanderthal zone was mostly Europe, modern Europeans have less Neanderthal ancestry (1.5%)

Other non-Africans at ~2%
This inter-breeding happened roughly 40-50K yrs ago in Near East and not Europe, as per Reich, soon after the early migration out of Africa of modern Humans

Soon after moving out, they met Neanderthals in the Near East, their long lost cousins who had left Africa 500K+ years ago
But Reich also believes the Neanderthal inheritance today is lower than it perhaps ought to have been because of natural selection

i.e.

The early hybrids of Neanderthals and modern Humans had lower fertility as compared to the rest of modern Humans

Over the past few months leading right-wing politicians have enjoined us to celebrate Britain for abolishing slavery. Here are six reasons why that's ridiculous:
1) Britain was not the first to abolish slavery. The Haitians did it in 1804. Britain didn't get around to it until three decades later - and then only reluctantly, under sustained pressure from slave revolts and radical social movements (to whom the real credit belongs).
2) The Abolition Act of 1833 was not progressive but rather explicitly racist, declaring that enslaved persons were not humans but property, that therefore abolition amounted to expropriation, and that slave owners must therefore be compensated for their loss.

Over the past few months, @SangerNYT and I learned Cyber Command has stepped up attacks on the Russian grid. Some say that after years of Russian attacks on the US grid, it’s long overdue. Others said this marks a dangerous escalation: nytimes.com/2019/06/15/us/…
Pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to brief Trump about the operations because they said his response was too “uncertain”— and the possibility he might countermand it or discuss it with Russian officials as he did in 2017 with a U.S operation in Syria.
P.S.: Working with @SangerNYT has been one of the highlights of my career. He gets answers like nobody else. This story started when he started asking questions about Cyber Command’s new “authorities.” When officials clammed up, we knew there was a ‘there’ there.

Over the past few months, I've come to a crossroads about free speech. I don't know how to reconcile the argument that the "war of ideas" is the best possible system with the mounting evidence that the ideas winning the war are in Alex Jones's head.
I don't know how to reconcile the argument that we must maintain a robust and open discourse on social media with the fact that YouTube's algorithm is grooming us to be sociopaths and Twitter's interface is giving us goldfish memories and piranha tendencies.
I don't know how to reconcile my place in the free speech discourse when everyone is adamantly convinced that their favorite catch-phrase about speech is a singularity of infinite truth. The argument over the depth and breadth of speech has become so shallow and narrow.

Turns out not to be any great mystery: capital spending looks great in comparison with 2016 and 2017. But by historical standards it's ... fine.
The capital spending dip in 2016 was mainly the oil and gas industry retrenching; its return to spending has been one of the big drivers of the capex rebound, as @RaphaelBostic explained last month frbatlanta.org/news/speeches/…

Over the past few months I have collected 500+ Trump, Pence and RNC tracking URLs dating back to June 2016. I've shared bits & pieces of this (⏬) as I've been looking under the hood, in search of the truth behind Project Alamo/Trump marketing ops.
