Things the government does based on hearsay (a non-exhaustive list):

Stop.
Search.
Surveil.
Eavesdrop.
Frisk.
Arrest.
Charge misdemeanors.
Charge felonies.
Secure search & arrest warrants. Detain pretrial on unaffordable bail.
Issue orders of protection.
Subpoena.
Indict.
Enhance sentences.
Revoke pretrial release.
Revoke probation.
Deny parole.

Good point. In my defense, @nycsouthpaw, I saw this thread as an educational opportunity about how much pain can be inflicted based on hearsay.

But yes, a non hearsay admission would justify all the above. Plus a conviction.
And I was talking only about criminal proceedings. Open it up to civil. Hearsay is used to:

Evict.
Detain for immigration proceeding.
Issue guardianship of adults.
Issue guardianship of minors.
Take children into protective custody.

In criminal court arraignments in Brooklyn. When public defenders meet people we represent, prosecution formally charges, judge determines bail & whether to issue orders of protection. Today, I’m going to focus on the pain the government inflicts everyday based on hearsay alone.
Its only 9:50am & already seen 6 people hauled, back cuffed, before a judge. Stopped, searched, arrested, cuffed, transported, fingerprinted, held in squalid conditions overnight, caged, retinas scanned, charged w/ crimes, facing 1 year on Rikers.

All entirely based on hearsay.
Prosecution has requested 6 orders of protection this morning. Btwn girlfriend & boyfriend, neighbors, parent & children. On one occasion, prosecutor had to ask defense the precise relationship. Orders mean: forced separation, eviction, homelessness.

All based on hearsay alone.

This twitter thread is independent grounds for impeachment, evidence of consciousness of guilt, active obstruction of justice, and just plain old unhinged & terrifying.
Also, as an aside, the 6th Amendment Confrontation Clause does not entitle someone to “meet” their accuser. If this was a criminal proceeding, an order of protection would already have issued. The Constitution allows—in a criminal trial—the right to confront on the witness stand.

To all of you who've tagged/messaged/texted me over the past few days: I'm humbled by your vote of confidence. I'm just a practitioner/advocate, but happy to offer some concrete steps. #CloseTheCampsNOW

Some context first:
1. Stop pointing out that these cruel practices aren't new. The takeaway isn't Obama was bad or Trump is worse. It's that we're fighting an entrenched system that feeds on detention. Trump didn't build the machine; his administration hasn't shown much aptitude in using it.
2. Total deportation numbers are down from Obama's era. This is a combination of incompetence from this administration, and (take a bow, y'all) "The Resistance," less cooperation with ICE, more legal challenges, and people just showing up.

They need to send lawyers & JUDGES into those torture camps along w/Fed. Marshals and take the ppl responsible for the horrifying conditions inside the Trump Concentration Camps and detain them for questioning about: ties to human trafficking & inspect their orders, charge them.

-learn to how to write a professional email. how to speak on the phone. and how to write a resume and cover letter. the avg person these days changes careers 4-6 times in their life. you'll be doing it a lot
