The presiding judge said that the verdict turned on the “predictability” of the massive tsunami that swamped the nuclear plant in March 2011 after a 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake.

The Great Alaska Earthquake occurred on March 27, 1964 and rocked the state with strong ground shaking that lasted four and a half minutes. #AlaskaEarthquake #earthquake
At M9.2, it was the 2nd largest quake ever recorded. This event also rocked the scientific community by confirming a major principle of #platetectonics with the observation that the oceanic Pacific Plate dives beneath the continental North American Plate at the Aleutian trench.
On average, #Alaska has 24,000+ measured earthquakes every year. Usually, there is at least one M7 every year. Between 1899 and 1986, eight #earthquakes of M8 or greater impacted different areas of the Aleutian subduction zone.

Im seeing more discussion on possibility of using (smaller) #nuclear reactors to generate heat (instead of electricity) to eventually help decarbonize district heating (& cooling via evap. chillers), industrial process heat, etc. I've wondered: what are the economics? #thread 👇
Heat is much less valuable then electricity. Then again, a nuclear plant is a great heater! Only about 33% of heat generated by a reactor is converted to electricity. So would it be worth it to produce heat instead of power?
There are 3412 Btus per kWh of electricity. So 1 MMBtu = 293 kWh. One kWh wholesale electricity sells for say 3-6 cents. So that's about $8.80-17.60 per MMBtu of electricity sold.

Would immediately result in loss of 1 of New England's largest sources of CO2-free power & 4.2% of region's annual electricity.
3. Now opposes Northern Pass transmission project & procurement of 9.45 TWh of hydropower from Quebec sierraclub.org/press-releases…

That project would bring in enough hydro to replace all of Pilgrim's lost generation + supply another 3.6% of NE's electricity, helping drive down CO2.

Six #nuclear reactors closed since 2013. By my count, up to 23 more reactors may retire w/o policy or market conditions improving: 21.6 GW = ~1/5th of US fleet, 4% of US #electricity--and crucially, 12% of emissions-free generation.
