Remember, Australia is only involved in this whole mess because an Australian official learned of a potential national security threat to the United States. Australia decided to share that information with its ally, so that the US could take any necessary steps to protect itself.
So although Trump's request for Australia to help AG Barr with an investigation was not improper on its face, what could be a much more serious concern is the message that Trump is sending to global leaders in advance of 2020.
Because the lesson Australia and the UK and Italy are all learning right now is this: if you happen learn of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2020 US election, or of Trump campaign efforts to assist in those efforts, then you should keep your mouth shut.
Because in 2016, when those countries tried to alert the United States to an urgent threat that it might be facing, the United States responded not by thanking them for the favor, but by retaliating against them.
