Conservatism, by definition, requires having the energy and optimism to play permanent defense for liberty. If we got the small-government max-freedom America of our dreams tomorrow, the battle to restore the welfare state would begin the following morning at the latest.
I can see why some people complain about Trump starting too many fights, often with Tweets he dashed off in 30 seconds that produce days of controversy, but a brief glance at the Democrats should instantly dispel any sense of "exhaustion" in anyone committed to conservatism.
"Exhaustion" is always the demoralizing storyline fed to conservatives. They were supposed to be exhausted from standing up for Reagan. Bush I was exhausted during his re-election campaign against vibrant young Bill Clinton. Bush II's policies were exhausting to defend.
Meanwhile, the Left tells its own followers to become more furious and energized with every defeat. You will search in vain for a single left-winger of stature telling his followers they should be exhausted by their futile, electorally suicidal march for gun control.
The struggle between statism and freedom boils down to an argument about the value of liberty. The statist tells you liberty is an abstract thing, far less valuable than the benefits given to you by socialist control. The liberty of OTHERS is supposed to have zero value to you.
Of course, in that paradigm, the statists constantly tell their adversaries to feel tired and exasperated. Your quixotic quest to convince people to take this abstract liberty stuff seriously and worry about the tax rates of rich people must be incredibly exhausting!
So there's nothing really new here, just the latest iteration of "holding back the tides of Progress is tedious work and your strength will surely fail at any moment." The Left will badger us forever, convinced they can wear us down into giving them what they want. /end
