1. W.P.(C) No. 649/2018, which relates to the administration of the Jagannath Puri Temple, was listed before the Supreme Court bench headed by Hon’ble Justice Arun Mishra.
2. The Amicus curiae, Senior Advocate Shri Ranjit Kumar, submitted his report on the ongoing demolition drive in Puri. The Bench expressed serious reservations with the demolition of centuries old Mathas by the State Government of Odisha.
3. The Bench observed that Mathas, even if dilapidated, cannot be demolished given their religious significance & historical value. The Bench directed Odisha Govt to commit resources to resettlement of affected parties before taking any further steps with respect to demolition.
4. Senior Advocate Shri Mohan Parasaran, who appeared on behalf of Mahants along with AOR @suvidutt, requested the Hon'ble Court to direct the State Govt to consult with the Mahants before continuing with its demolition spree in the name of development.
5. The Bench agreed with the submission of Sr. Adv. Shri Mohan Parasaran and directed the State Government to consult the Mahants, who are important stakeholders as Mathadipathis. The next date of hearing in the Petition is October 22, 2019
6. The legal team of the @indiccollective handled the Petitions on behalf of the Mahants.
