1. That hilarious @TheBabylonBee headline about clicks got me thinking...there are a lot of people out there who don't understand that most of us who make our living on the internet earn it through your clicks.
2. We design our headlines to catch your eye, but we really want you to click on the story. Of course we want you to read (and hopefully appreciate) what we wrote...but we also want to get paid for what we wrote.
3. Some top tier writers are contracted and get paid a salary, but most of us are out here hustling for clicks. Its hard out here in these internet streets! You see the viral stuff and it looks like fun but a lot of work goes into those things.
4. Even when I was hanging out with @TheBabylonBee guys they were writing and editing right up until it was time to talk, and any breaks we took they were right back at it. My op eds be easy reads but for many writers every word is anguish.
5. It takes me hours, sometimes days to craft a good op ed. Then you have to walk the razor's edge of finding a headline that will draw the reader's attention but won't be so eyecatching that it becomes a "headline sharer" instead of a click.
6. Anyway, I'm not admonishing anyone. But I still get a lot of questions from family about how I get paid from this whole internet thing. I think sometimes it is helpful for people to understand the part they play in circle of internet life.
7. Moral - when you read a headline you like, give it a click. Even if you don't read the story you still help the writers. We can't thank you enough. - FIN
