White ZIP codes are systematically overcharged for auto insurance relative to minority areas, a Missouri regulatory agency finds.
Two years ago, ProPublica published their own analysis claiming minorities were overcharged. The chief actuary for the Insurance Information Institute, and several other firms, tried to explain to them why their method was flawed, but they ran with it anyway.
The report motivated studies by state regulators such as this one, which re-iterated that rates are tightly regulated and there is no minority bias.
Another amusing finding from the study: Who'd like to speak to your manager?

Minority customers file regulatory complaints at the highest rate, all else being equal, and no other variable comes close to explaining this.
Possible story: Insurers know that A) minorities are vocal complainers to the state, and B) their industry is often accused of bias.

So learn towards charging whites a little extra. Few will complain on their behalf. Accept some loss on non-whites as the cost of doing business.
