It’s been hugely frustrating to see how this paper has distorted the conversation on race and police shootings. Despite its fatal flaws (and for the questions it sought to answer, they *were* fatal), this paper will now live on forever, zombie social science that will never die.
For the curious, here is a quick rundown of its problems. PNAS essentially acknowledged the critique, but refused to retract or amend.

Yet one more case of a piece of research getting huge press (eg this fawning and triumphant write-up by Heather MacDonald), while the subsequent critique is quietly and studiously ignored. Presumably because it doesn’t tell people what they want to hear.

Oh well. It’s just the question of whether and to what extent the armed actors of the state might be shooting citizens based on their race. No biggie.
@robbysoave @jessesingal I can’t remember if you guys ever wrote about this, but it’s right up your alley.
