Australia and the EU edge closer to a comprehensive trade deal which Britain is about to rip up and start negotiating again by itself.

One of the great stumbling blocks of this AU-EU deal is that the European Union has much higher standards than Australia. They will have to up theirs in order for the deal to happen because of course they are the smaller party.

Patel's parents moved here from Uganda and set up a chain of newsagents. They are the very essence of what hard working immigrants can do to improve a country and provide vital services. But they would have failed the points based system.
Neither of her parents went to university. Her Mum had a job sewing, her Dad had a job at a Kodak factory. They sought a better life for themselves. They moved to the UK and set up a successful business. Fantastic. Now their daughter seeks to stop others doing the same

The Brexit Party MEPs just *abstained* on a resolution calling for Iran to release Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

Such heroes
I'm guessing it's because they "don't recognise the EP" ... funny though.... they're happy to recognise the pay cheques
UKIP used to do this. Was always very principled on abstaining until such time as pay packets and pensions were discussed.

I was in the Republic of Ireland the day the Euro came in. The front page was incredibly positive - along the lines of "dawn of a new Euro." When I arrived back home I saw the English edition. Complete opposite.

The belief is EU suppresses trade with the Commonwealth. Don't know, once you exclude individual negotiations with Canada/Aus/India, that the EU gives most of the Commonwealth tariff-free access to the EU. Instead, leave means going backwards.

Take this for example, ditch #EU regulation and replace it in order to reach a trade deal with the US. They will have us for breakfast, forcing further deregulation and acceptance of harmful agri-products. Industry don’t necessarily want it and in services they will squeeze us./2
This; how, what and when? @DavidDavisMP has been Secretary of State for 2 years and hasn’t come up with any substantial and viable proposals, as the technology doesn’t exist. Neither has he strongly engaged with the #EU27 to work this out due to lack of internal HMG agreement. /3

1. A thread on #trade and aid.

One of the first tangible benefits of #Brexit I've seen is the emerging reform of @DFID_UK where it is becoming more of an arm of trade policy than a state owned humanitarian NGO. I would like that to go much further and rethink trade.
2. I do not think we should be wasting too much effort on free trade deals largely because they are of questionable value and encourage inefficient value chains. Any work on tariffs should really be reserved for multilateral activity.
3. Instead we need DfID as the spearhead of our trade policy. There is no reason why we cannot pursue humanitarian goals and enhance our trade while we are at it. For a start we can do a lot with medicines and pharmacy products.

This is gonna be long, but I think it's worth it. A well-regarded twitter poster, let’s call him Giorgio, has recently publish a thread stating among other things as follows. “The pathways to stopping or delaying Brexit are blocked.
But once the mandate is discharged, the pathways to UK rejoining, or being in a close association agreement with EU, within the single market and customs union, will be open, with no obstacles.”
This approach annoys me for two reasons, one because Giorgio seems to be attempting to cajole Remainers to put all activity on hold until we actually leave the #EU.
