This piece is severely naive about what cancel culture is or how it works.

Imagine being so oblivious to asymmetries in cultural or institutional power to think "Mutually Assured Cancellation" is actually a thing.

Also, imagine thinking that the pathetic Carson King affair actually DEMONSTRATES the Mutually Assured Cancellation thesis.

Only a conservative would be naive enough to believe this.

Quite the contrary, the Carson King issue strengthened Cancel Culture's public legitimacy and its capacity to cancel people who actually pose a threat.

So I give this City Journal (usually a worthy publication) piece a D-

Chinese citizens understand the authoritarian regime they live in and know that President XI is in charge.

Similarly Russia--its citizens know what type of regime it is and that Putin is in charge.

America is quite different, and less transparent. Less clear who is in charge
The profound discrepancy between the actual nature of the regime and the public understanding of the regime may in fact be an essential feature of the regime type itself.
Such regime types require a much more sophisticated type of social control (function of mass media and cultural institutions). "totalitarian" in scope but not just that. If totalitarian implies scope or breadth it fails to capture the depth.

Some reflections on Bloom:

Long before his death, Bloom had already become an anachronism. In the sense that someone of his talent, aesthetic sensibility and SOUL would likely not even be admitted to grad school much less thrive in academy.
By far the greatest American in the "humanities" Bloom was not awarded the Jefferson Lecture

Encourages us to reflect generally on the place (or lack) for such great figures in our increasingly ridiculous country that celebrates ugliness, mediocrity and assorted cattle feed.
-Blooms famous elevation of AESTHESIS over didactic function of literature underscores the stupidity of strictly conservative approaches to resurrecting Western values via lit.

Due to social media, everyone is a public figure and everyone is a journalist.

Because everyone is a public figure, professional journalists feel justified in attacking them for clicks.

But because everyone is a journalist, professional journalists will get similar treatment.
Return fire changes the incentive structure for professional journos.

Before, they could simply attack someone's reputation for profit without much consequence. Now there is significant downside for doing so.

What the mob surfaces can be used by their peers to outwoke them.

THREAD on jr faculty & the tenure process

Over the years & esp in the last 4 as @mitsloan’s deputy dean, I've developed some advice for how junior faculty should think about the tenure process. Here it is, boiled down.

(Followed by a few caveats & notes)
The main idea is that you , as new assistant prof, should develop your *own standard for granting tenure,* a standard that meets two criteria:

(a) It should be a standard you personally think is a fair & useful basis by which schools of your desired rank should grant lifetime..
... job security to faculty in your field.

(b) The standard should explain meaningful variance in observable tenure outcomes for faculty in that field & school rank

I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
It took over my teenage years. I don’t remember having much of a life as a teenager because dialysis was 3x a week & every session was 4hrs. Add the time it takes to recover from being exhausted by the process, my day was pretty much over. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
