Today is National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day; many of the same factors driving #HIV in Black communities are driving it in Latinx communities as well.

“The way to move forward is to really tackle and address the structural issues.” — @latinoactivist

@latinoactivist The fights against #AIDS in Black and Latino communities have also been historically linked. In #Philadelphia, Programa Esfurezo was modeled on @bebashi, one of the country’s first Black AIDS service orgs.
@latinoactivist @bebashi In this clip, @bebashi founder Rashidah Abdul Khabeer (formerly Hassan) talks about the links between her group and others, such as @Congreso1977

@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 Some groups, such as Minority Task Force on AIDS in New York City, combined services for different communities of color.

@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 In San Francisco, the Third World AIDS Advisory Task Force grew out of dissatisfaction with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and pushed for more outreach to communities of color. Learn more about TWAATF at @ucsf_archives:

@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 @ucsf_archives The National Task Force on AIDS Prevention started as a project of @NABWMT and pioneered coalitional AIDS organizing and education among different groups of gay men of color.
@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 @ucsf_archives @NABWMT NTFAP staff in 1991 included Alan McCord, Gavin Morrow Hall, Steve Feeback, Al Cunningham, Juan Rodriguez, James Fonduex, and Executive Director Reggie Williams.

@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 @ucsf_archives @NABWMT NTFAP started the Gay Men of Color Consortium to share resources and capacity among groups for gay men of color. At different times GMOCC included Comunidad Unida en Respuesta al SIDA and Proyecto ContraSIDA Por Vida, along with Native American and Asian-American groups.
@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 @ucsf_archives @NABWMT Proyecto started Colegio ContraSIDA, which offered creative courses such as “Retablos del Retrovirus,” which used art forms from Latinidad to confront the #AIDS crisis.

@latinoactivist @bebashi @Congreso1977 @ucsf_archives @NABWMT @RadioRodriguez Which points to a key aspect of both Black and Latinx #AIDS programs: the idea that only culturally specific outreach and education would reach minority communities.
