2/x “Mass population-backed vaccination in the UK should now END.”

He urged ministers to support research into Covid #immunity beyond #antibodies to include #whitebloodcells such as #B-cells and #T-cells.

Neutralization data for #omicron is out. By request of @andrew_croxford, I try to explain how scientists investigate #neutralization. First, it's lab-based data. It’s impossible to directly conclude from neutralization data that #vaccines will not work anymore in the field. 1/X
@andrew_croxford Second, assays are legion! I developed one myself, which is different to the one used by the lab of e.g., @CiesekSandra, in terms of #virus, incubation times, etc. Keep that in mind if you compare two papers directly. I will explain how I did my assay. 2/X
@andrew_croxford @CiesekSandra Third, you must understand that such an assay generates data about neutralization of the virus by antibodies in the serum. These assays do not allow for measuring the effect of e.g., T cells or memory B cells.
@sailorrooscout talks about that here: 3/X

As Delta ebbs, immunocompromised people remain in limbo, I report for @NBCNews. The FDA could OK monoclonal antibodies as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for this vulnerable population, giving them the Covid protection that for them vaccines may not.🧵⬇️…
Preliminary research suggests #Regeneron's REGEN-COV monoclonal antibody and @AstraZeneca's own cocktail, given in advance of potential exposure to #Covid, could reduce risk by perhaps 80%. Advanced clinical trials are ongoing, with results expected over the next 18 months. 2/
The big question I address in my article for @NBCNews (see thread^) is just how accessible monoclonal antibodies as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) will be for the immunocompromised people, for whom such preventive therapy could be a ticket back to some semblance of normalcy. 3/

As a society we need to
listen to #antivaxxers more
and attack them less.
They are scared.
We don’t know why
until we listen to them.
They want to talk about their fears in the form of statements. People think w words, and often need to process ideas verbally
to sort them.
I just met a very awesome man who has an immune compromised wife.
He is scared of the vaccines.
He kept talking about Malone (quack) and the tech being too new (its not) and all the fear Fear FEAR thats been surrounding the #pandemic and #vaccine rollouts. He is scared.
We DO gain antibodies after natural infection, but they wane. And there aren’t as many of them w natural vs acquired. It takes our bodies a full week to gather troops and launch an attack.
Thats a week of gained if you already have waiting #antibodies.
So how do we communicate?

Can #SARSCoV2 #variants fully evade #vaccine induced protection? Or even natural protection?
The rapid emergence of too many different #variants shows that the virus is struggling to survive! That is why it’s changing so fast, probably, to prolong its stay in human bodies 1/
Though #vaccines may not be working perfectly against some #VOCs, but those fully vaccinated are protected against severe disease & death. No VOC can completely evade the vaccine induced protection, especially against severe disease & death! Why?.......... 2/
The #variants do not have changes in T-cell epitopes because when you are infected with a variant that evades an antibody, that variant can go to someone else and evade their antibody too. So it spreads through the population.... 3/

Do children produce different types of #antibodies(Abs) against #SARSCoV2 than adults? 1/ Image
Yes, children mostly produced Abs aimed at #Spike protein, which the virus uses to enter cells. Adults generate similar Abs, but also develop Abs against the #Nucleocapsid protein, which is essential for viral replication 2/
#Nucleocapsid protein is typically released in significant quantities only when a virus is widespread in the body.
What does it mean? The kids lacked nucleocapsid-specific Abs, which suggests that they aren’t experiencing widespread infection. 3/

First Dose!
I'm very excited to be joining #GenXZeneca . Even though it took a bit to get an appointment, the process itself was super fast and painless.

This week also marks the conclusion of the undergraduate immunology course I run. As getting vaccinated is basically a live-demo summary of the entire course, I thought I'd celebrate by live-tweeting my immune response to the vaccine.
#Nerdy , but fun!
(I'm not sure how many of my students would agree about the "fun" part, but I doubt any are on twitter anyway and so they get out of this impromptu lab component).

Test 1: Molecular test (the most common is Rt-#PCR, or #pcrtest ). This test scans your sample for traces of specific #SARSCoV2 genetic sequences to see if they are easily found in your system. 1/n
The #PCR test result includes a value called “Cycle Threshold” (or #ct ). This basically measures how long it takes for the test to identify the #SARSCoV2 -specific genetic sequence in your sample. 2/n

1/ Do I need the vaccine if I’ve already been infected w/ COVID-19? Isn’t natural immunity better?

A: COVID-19 vaccines produce STRONGER & MORE CONSISTENT antibody responses than natural infection, meaning EVERYONE can benefit from the protection.

💥Don’t give away your shot!
2/ As more people become eligible for the COVID-19, we’ve heard some people who’ve already been infected, especially younger people, doubting whether they need the vaccine.
3/ We now have good evidence that vaccines produce HIGHER antibody levels on average against SARS-CoV-2 than natural infection, & people vaccinated after previous infection get a BIG boost.
