The race to cross the line with a “deal” means a race to the bottom on the daily protections we take for granted.

“Deregulation” means throwing away the safety net of workers’ & environmental rights.

You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone, or swamped in technical jargon.
Here’s stg I wrote for @prospect_uk on working rights & equality after Brexit back in April 2018.

So lost are we in the circus of “will-he/we-won’t-we”, we’ve completely stopped asking the critical q of where Brexit leaves us. Worse off, quantifiably.

I understand the feeding frenzy over whether a deal is in reach, I do.

But words like “deal” have become so brandished in the Brexit political lexicon that, without detailed & dispassionate analysis, they become loaded with the assumption that they are inherently a good thing.
No deal is a disaster & every effort must be made to avoid it.

But so tumbled about & fatigued are we by the whole charade & theatre of Brexit that we are not stopping to ask what the “deal” means (beyond customs implications) for all of us, in the days and years ahead.
Getting Brexit Done is both mischievous and grievous harm. It is a nonsense and every politician who utters it should be held to the consequences of their distorting words.

Deregulation too has real life consequences.

The job of the media now must be to dismantle these terms.
Ask what Brexit might mean for your working rights, for your maternity rights, for disabled family & friends, or what it may mean for Britain’s compliance with the highest environmental standards & intn’l cooperation.

Rolling back hard-won rights is what deregulation means.
