This is what it looks like when a newbie first-time author finds out from Twitter that her book already has an Amazon pre-order page amazon.com/End-Everything… ‼️‼️‼️
The link currently has a stand-in cover and I think even the subtitle will change before the final version so I’ll do a real pre-order announcement then but in the meantime this is very exciting!!

This teapot is giving me attitude
The physics of this is that the lid fits perfectly and is stable when the teapot is cold or empty. But the heat from the tea makes the plastic lid a little less stiff and expands it slightly, so the pressure of its edges against the glass launches it up into the air. ✨
(I should add that this doesn’t usually happen. It’s just an unfortunate coincidence of the precise sizes of a couple of the pot/lid combos. Usually the teapots are very well behaved!)

Great thread on strategies for not overloading yourself in #academia.

(Of course, not everyone has the same freedom to say no to various requests, but these strategies are great advice for when you have the choice!)

Please stop doing podcasts with terrible people
I have in the past worked with people who turned out to be terrible and so I stopped working with them because working with terrible people gives them legitimacy and tacit approval and we could just not do that???
There are so many people in the world! A lot of them are really lovely! If you have a really big platform please try to spend your time and attention and social capital on the nice ones, for all our sakes.

Interesting but woefully incomplete @nytimes article by @MaggieAstor on the current push to lower the voting age to 16. A thread on this article: nytimes.com/2019/05/19/us/… 1/
First, the article highlights up front a recent survey showing little support for lowering the voting age. But that survey apparently didn't let respondents know that 17-year-olds *already vote* in many state's primaries if they will be 18 by the general election. 2/
And, of course, many people are surprised to learn that 16- and 17-year-olds already vote in about a half dozen cities in local or school board elections. Democracy hasn't seemed to fail in those places. 3/

I have done a terrible, terrible thing because I am a terrible person.

In my final year of high school, I had an English teacher whose feedback I found tremendously useful. I enjoyed his class, and I got a lot out of it.

But he hated my writing.
I have always written in the way that I speak, kind of circular and lacking in formality. It was not his cup of tea. He’d get frustrated with my essays because he would like the ideas and dislike the execution.
In a not unkind way, he told me that he didn’t think that any kind of career involving writing was in my future.

I wasn’t hurt by it, I respected his opinion, and I took my C+ in his class.

1. Important! If you want to support an author, please do not wait for their book release day/week/month to buy their book. In publishing, pre-orders are critical! Pre-orders can make or break a book, so if you want to show your support here's why you should pre-order..(cont)
2. First, with respect to bestseller lists (NYT bestseller list being the most important) all the pre-order sales are counted as part of the first weeks sales. Getting on the bestseller lists launch week brings more attention and increased sales to books.
3. Landing on the bestseller list (especially for a first time author) can be a game changer. More book deals, speaking opportunities, and increased media visibility can offer stability to an author who is used to living paycheck-to-paycheck.
