Ever since @karlitaliliana introduced me to the term racial literacy, it has been burning a hole in my brain. It really helped put things into context watching all these white people confused and struggling as they try to be part of the discourse.
@karlitaliliana It's really at the core of understanding privilege. When you realize that there is all this shit that other people just know, and you've never had to because everybody was expected to work around your ignorance.
@karlitaliliana I have a certain amount of empathy for those initial feelings of disorientation and shame. I'm on a similar journey as a heterosexual man. I've fucked up a lot of things while I figured out how to stay in my lane and learn on feminist or LGBTQ issues.
@karlitaliliana But there was a point when I went from being anxious about this journey to appreciating the growth. Every time I go through something, I come out being able to expand my ability to treat more people with the dignity and respect they deserve.
@karlitaliliana A lot of people say they want a more diverse and equitable society. When we talk about building a literacy around these issues, it's because each of us as an individual has to make sure WE are ready to be part of that society. It's not separate from what we bring into it.
