1/ A few thoughts/questions coming out of #elxn2019:

Who curated that CBC election panel? I ask because I can't figure out for the life of me who thought it would be a great idea to have Jian Ghomeshi's defence lawyer on the CBC for an entire night. And, let's be clear:

2/ I'm not saying Marie Henein should be on tv or have a platform or any of that. I'm just saying that it struck me as a really poor choice given all of the alternatives.

2) we're talking about "politics" without acknowledging that that word carries many different meanings.

3/ Most commentators discuss politics as the art and science of government. Most people I know–marginalized people–are talking about politics as policy, the sh!t that impacts their lives. Part of why the coverage is so frustrating is bc commentators

4/ are lauding strategy (can you believe JT survived the blackface scandal?!) w/o actually addressing anti-Black racism in Cda.

3) Too many white people. PoC got all of the qns relating to race! You may think that this is a good thing: they let PoC speak to their experience!

5/ BUT when the majority of questions about strategy fall to white people and questions about race fall to PoC it reinforces the idea race is a single issue RATHER than a part of all of these issues.

4) I really don't need holograms.

5) the canada wasn't ready for a leader...

6/ w/ a turban narrative is racist. Rather than flipping the narrative around identity politics & showing that it's actually wypipo (not PoC) that will vote for someone manifestly unqualified solely because of their skin colour, the news centers whiteness & says Cdns aren't ready

7/ which canadians? I was certainly ready for a leader with a turban. Lastly, 6) we seriously need to consider the ethics of posting poll results when the country has MULTIPLE time zones. I could go on forever but these are some preliminary thoughts & questions. Please chime in.
