So, in order to achieve a switch to "green energy tech" (solar, wind etc.) inordinate quantities of minerals are required. The World Bank already estimates as much as 300% increase in demand.

Whilst the stats here are not just for minerals, they do make clear the environmental impact of extractive industries, which account for 53% of the world's carbon emissions already. A 300% increase in mineral extraction is, thus, a huge uptick in carbon. theguardian.com/environment/20…
Aside from the damage caused by extraction, there physically are not enough materials on earth to do this. Case in point: the world does not have enough cobalt to replace even just British cars. autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/10705…

Labour's imperialist "green" new destruction must be rejected outright. The real solution to the climate crisis rests in the construction of a communist society. Its material infrastructure, if I may be so bold, will be based upon that which grows in harmony with our earth.

There is a future worth fighting for, a communist one. With extinction already upon us there is no excuse. It is quite clear that the social democrats and green new dealers offer no solution.

Firstly, we must ground this in contemporary US nuclear policy. As was revealed last year, the US now considers nuclear arms not only viable, but a potential at every stage of military planning. This gives a broad contexr.
The thinking behind this is derived from Herman Kahn. It is the idea that nuclear arms can be used in a limited way and that this need not escalate to all out nuclear confrontation. The US now even believes that a limited strike may "restore strategic stability".

Trump just declared war and peace simultaneously.

The "hybrid" and "greyzone" US approach to Iran continues. This will continue to escalate, and the US will make more moves. #HandsOffIran
There were only three big moments in Trump's rambly nonsense:

(a) the *demand* that Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China *must* abandon the JCPOA (which is already dead) is a more aggressive iteration of what the US is trying here anyway. It may backfire spectacularly;
(b) the hypersonic missile mention was an attempt to show that the US can deter Russia - it can't because the US missiles aren't operational;

(c) "we do not need middle east oil" confirms US objectives in the region are about getting other exporters off the market now.

Escalations with Iran are a result of the failure of US policy to starve the nation into submission in its attempts to rip up the Iran deal, beginning in 2018. It does represent a serious global escalation, but this must be understood in context. #WorldWarThree #HandsOffIran
Faced with China continuing to purchase Iranian crude, an inability to stop it and Europe's continued political support for the Iran deal forcing it into a closer relation with China and Russia on the matter, the US has needed to strike a decisive blow.
Whilst the JCPOA has essentially been practically dead for a while now, the US strike is intended as a killing blow, forcing Brussels to drop the matter. This very well might be the case, but the case for a reallignment of the EU imperialist bloc will gain audience if it does.

Thread 1. For many the main takeway from this report seems to people should 'eat less meat and become a vegetarian' otherwise we face a food crisis. Its clearly a good thing for many reasons to cut meat consumption - health, climate etc. But whats missing from this story....
2. Well first of all - 1 in 3 people already face hunger issues, close to billion face malnutrition not in the future but right now. So the hunger crisis is happening -but of course its happening to people in the global South so it only matters when it might impact 'rich' people
3. Yet a 1/3 of all the food produced is wasted and a 1/3 of all soil eroded. You would be forgiven for thinking this was a result of something magical that could only be fixed by 'individual consumers' changing their habits rather than this has been deliberately engineered.

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)

When I hear ppl saying that we need systems change and not culture change to address #climate breakdown, I think ppl overstate the ability of top down law reform to change culture. Law reform is not particularly effective and changing culture. 1/
Guess what - the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments did not achieve the end of slavery, equality, or the right to vote for African Americans. Slave state culture maintained near total African servitude, inequality, and vote suppression for a century b/c it was in the culture. 2/
Prohibition was written into the constitution. People did not stop drinking b/c it was in the culture, and the temperance forces didn’t give resources to enforce prohibition b/c it drinking really didn’t affect them except philospophically. 3/
