If you’ve been watching my twitter stream recently, you may have noticed this but today’s a good day to be explicit: As someone who’s worked on the #climate crisis at the international, national and local levels for 15 years, I’m proud to be a climate leader #WithWarren. (🧵)
I spend my life fighting for climate justice and I’m absolutely convinced that a President @ewarren would work tirelessly to bring the big, structural change we need to address this climate crisis. Here are a few of the many reasons why I’m proud to be #WithWarren:
.@ewarren understands that corruption lies at the center the climate crisis. That’s why she was the first declared Presidential candidate to sign the #NoFossilFuelMoney pledge and is ready to stand up to the out-of-control fossil fuel industry.
.@ewarren was first out of the gate to call for an end to fossil fuel leasing on public lands. This set a standard among the entire Democratic field...and it's no small thing. We spent all of the Obama years pushing him on this. She will do it on day one. elizabethwarren.com/plans/climate-…
I love how @ewarren weaves climate action into nearly every plan she puts out. The climate crisis needs to be tackled from all angles, and she gets that. Whether it’s immigration policy, trade policy, jobs, disabilities rights...climate is there. elizabethwarren.com/plans/climate-…
Senator @ewarren has smart people around her, and more important still, she listens. She takes feedback. She builds her brilliant and ambitious plans upon the work of her colleagues and activists and community members. Her plans reflect that input and they are better for it.
She’s taken on board many aspects of @jayinslee's plans. Her team worked w/ @ayanaeliza on a #BlueNewDeal. She took input from @juliancastro for her immigration plan. She listens to community leaders. It’s awesome. We need more of this sort of humility.
It's fundamental to climate justice too. There are no real climate solutions without justice at the center. I know that @ewarren will listen to communities most impacted & work with them to build solutions that work for everyone. And @rgunns agrees:
I also believe @ewarren knows what's needed to follow through on her plans. She's seen the dysfunction of the Senate first hand and supports abolishing the filibuster in order to pass climate legislation, a position she shares w/ climate champ @jayinslee.
I simply feel that @ewarren has the whole package. As my friend Rebecca Solnit put it, “I see her as a combination of three superpowers: wonkiness, radicalness and what for lack of a better term I would call Big Structural Mom Energy.” I’m in. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
AND I want my kids to grow up believing that anyone can be President. I believe that @ewarren will be an amazing first woman President and I hope to explain to my daughter and to my son that I helped get her elected.
Finally, and so, so importantly: @ewarren is not afraid. And I don’t want to be either.
And now...because it seems that these are required at this point (sigh), some separate but related comments:
First, this is a ***personal*** endorsement.
Second, I will obviously vote for whichever Democrat is running against Trump in the general election. Period. Obviously.
Third, because I know it’s coming: Of course Bernie has a fantastic climate plan & history of activism. I have admired and supported him for years. I voted for him in 2016. He’s obviously a climate champ and if he’s the nominee, I will do whatever I can to support his campaign.
Relatedly, the climate movement should be proud of the way the conversation on climate has shifted in this election. Climate is a top tier issue like never before. Candidates (mostly) are competing to be seen as the best on climate. This is good!
While I may be #WithWarren, supporting @ewarren because I believe in her commitment to the climate crisis, I won’t stop pushing her or any candidate to be even bolder. I won’t hesitate to call out bad policies or actions, and I won’t compromise.
But all that said, as someone who works on the climate crisis every single day, it comes down to this: I’m proud to support @ewarren for President and I hope you will too. #WithWarren
