RIP Don valentine. Just two days ago I spent an evening reading his fabulous interview (digitalassets.lib.berkeley.edu/roho/ucb/text/…) & now realized I was reading his life history while he was probably breathing his last. I've captured some of my fav snippets here but the whole interview is gold.
On MBAs
At age 27(?), clarity on PMF...
On what matters...
Early investing filters that he later finessed as an angel investor...
How one man made VC investing scalable in the US. Prudent Man rule.
Why silicon valley was successful where others were not, Don's take on it.
Early meeting with Steve Jobs.
Don on adding new talent to his team.
Pitching to Don was probably nerve wracking but immensely useful...
Give Don a large enough market and the right business model, and he didn't care if Genghis Khan ran the company....
Don on what really goes wrong as companies scale and lose innovation.
And finally, again, on silicon valley where Don set his roots deep and strong just like the tree he named his company after, and grew taller than everything around him. RIP.
