The first big Oscar-season awards show is tonight! Anyone who’s a contender is expected at the Governors Awards, where they’ll schmooze with scads of Oscar voters and see honorary awards given to David Lynch, Geena Davis, Wes Studi, and Lina Wertmüller. Follow along!
Two of the best seats in the house tonight are going to....
......Nate Parker is here?
Bonghive? Assemble.
Just reconnected with Robert Pattinson, who is still in a bit of shell-shock from meeting Jennifer Lopez this weekend. “She was lovely!”
I was chatting with Kevin Feige about the people who still mispronounce his last name (Feige, ever humble, loves that sort of modesty check) when Disney head Alan Horn ambled up. “THOR notes,” he said. “Where are we on those?” Feige replied, “Meeting on Thursday.”
Shia’s here
Sorry, I didn’t react in time to get a pic of Matthew Rhys eagerly introducing himself to Greta Gerwig. I know how you are on the internet! You would have liked that!
I don’t claim they’re good pictures — the lights were off and I had to dial this up to full brightness — but here you go, internet. Here is Greta Gerwig meeting Pedro Almodóvar.
Jamie Foxx just cajoled Eddie Murphy to the stage so he could meet him (and get a pic for his insta)
Isabella Rossellini says David Lynch hotly pursued Helen Mirren for BLUE VELVET, who declined it because it was too controversial. Not long after, the script arrived on Isabella’s doorstop with a note: “On second thought, since Helen wouldn’t do the film, would you consider it?”
Your parents are here
Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan first met David Lynch at a Bob’s Big Boy where Lynch was doodling on the tablecloth using ketchup and his finger. Yep, that checks out
“Most days you walk on to set, you will find David [Lynch] painting a wall, hand-making a prop, and seamlessly setting up a shot,” says Laura Dern.
God is happy! Here is David Lynch finally getting an Oscar!
Who better to hand Geena Davis the Jean Hersholt Awards than “an old white guy who’s been on the cover of AARP magazine?” asks Tom Hanks.
Here is Tom Hanks recapping A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN for you (and for, to her surprise, Charlize Theron)
Now Constance Wu is recapping A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN! I’m fine with this! Who wants next?
As Geena Davis took the stage, the camera cut to Greta Gerwig murmuring, “She’s beautiful”
In the movies, “81% of the characters with jobs are male,” says Geena Davis. “People characterize Hollywood as full of bleeding-heart liberals... hardly! If we are supposed to be ‘intersectional, gender-fluid feminists,’ then let’s do it up right!”
Honoree Wes Studi looking extremely fly tonight
Q'orianka Kilcher praises Wes Studi’s influence on Native actors: “It can be done. One person can make a difference. And we are still here.”
U.S. poet laureate Joy Harjo is now presenting to Wes Studi, and noted of the crowd applause: “Natives are in the house, and this is Indian country.”
Christian Bale is on stage talking about Wes Studi’s work on AVATAR. Christian Bale squinting at a TelePrompTer that says “Na’vi” is my new north star
Look at Wes Studi’s pride (and his bicep curls) as he’s given an Oscar!
“I’m proud to be here tonight as the first Indigenous Native American to receive an Academy Award,” says Wes Studi to a massive standing ovation. “It’s a humbling honor to receive an award for something I love to do.”
Jon Hamm just walked Sophia Loren to the stage. Honestly, cast them as a couple!
Of director Lina Wertmüller, “She has made history by being herself,” said Sophia Loren, who then paused. “I wish I could do this in Italian! The anxieties are there, no doubt about it. But I will go on, because I am strong.”
Greta Gerwig and Jane Campion are presenting to Lina Wertmüller. “I ate her films,” Gerwig said, speaking of her early, voracious appetite for the director. “She turned me into an addict.”
“I’ve been asked to talk about the history of women in the directing category,” says Jane Campion. “It’s a very short history. More of a haiku.”
The 91-year old Lina Wertmüller was the first woman nominated for the best-director Oscar. Tonight, she has finally been given an honorary Academy Award.
Isabella Rossellini is translating for Lina Wertmüller, who has decided to give her Oscar a more feminine name, “the Anna.” Wertmüller is dedicating the Anna to her husband.
Isabella Rossellini offered to translate for Wertmüller, who muttered something in Italian. “You shut up!” Rossellini translated. Wertmüller said that Rossellini’s purple dress was bad luck. “The next time I come dressed in purple,” Rossellini translated, “she will undress me.”
Lina Wertmüller is now just roasting people! “Sophia Loren made a pact with the devil,” she cracked via translator Isabella Rossellini. She’s referring to Loren’s legendary beauty, but it’s hilarious to watch Loren’s reaction
Show’s over but everyone is still here. Nate Parker is walking around, tapping actresses like Lupita Nyong’o and Cynthia Erivo on the shoulder to say hi.
Saoirse Ronan appears to be here with George MacKay? No Timothee tonight
Quentin Tarantino is talking Noah Baumbach’s ear off
Lina Wertmüller is 91 and having a better after-party than you
I wrote up the Governors Awards and my brief encounter with Nate Parker: nytimes.com/2019/10/28/mov…
