Thread: In the busyness of last night a number of folks asked what a "technical rescue" is. Let's discuss.
Definition: "Technical rescue" refers to the aspects of saving life that employ the use of tools and skills that exceed those normally reserved for emergency medical services or firefighting.
In Halifax, the technical rescue speciality involves rope/hi angle rescue, collapse rescue, trench rescue, and confined space rescue.
The technical rescue crews are stationed at STN3 (West St) and STN7 (Knightsridge) and they provide technical rescue services for all of HRM.
The team at those stations including chiefs, is 12-14 people per shift. However, on any given shift, there are usually technical rescue technicians at other stations that could be used for a larger incident.
Last night's "technical rescue" would fall under the rope/hi angle speciality, with someone up in a tower. Other common rope rescue scenarios include hikers who have fallen off of cliffs, stuck window washers, etc.
HRFE is expanding its technical rescue capacity through participation in the national HUSAR program. This will expand upon HRFE's trained personnel and equipment, and allow for deployment across Canada and beyond.
Most of HRFE's technical rescue equipment is carried on Rescue 3 and Trench Rescue 3, both trucks that operate out of STN3, West St.
Some examples of HRFE's technical rescue team in action-
1- rope rescue of an injured hiker in Musquodoboit Harbour: thechronicleherald.ca/news/hiking-in…

2- Lucknow St collapse rescue: cbc.ca/news/canada/no…
3- They've rescued/extricated injured people off ships a number of times:
