It’s official - minister in Boris Johnson’s Government at 2.06pm changed UK law by statutory instrument exit date from October 31st to Jan 31st.

Dexeu minister James Duddridge got pleasure of signing it into law...

It comes immediately into force - which rather makes a mockery of the briefed story over summer of the commencement of the exit date in the EU WA, complete with pic of Barclay signing - that made no difference at all...
quite the turnaround for minister James Duddridge to actually sign SI which is actual extension of the Exit Date in UK law from tomorrow to January 31..

He was one of 82 signatories of this Bill Cash EDM seeking to annul the last extension to Oct 31st

EU (Withdrawal) Act 2018 officially changed now of Legislation website

Before:

“Exit day” means 31 October 2019 at 11:00pm

Now:

“Exit day” means 31 January 2020 at 11:00pm

specific technical issue around electric cars and Brexit that I reported a year ago.

The value of the electric battery powertrain is a large proportion of value of finished car, much more than petrol engine would be.

Therefore, v difficult to risk it not counting as EU content

Last time after local elections 2017 there was almost a stock market style response to the “uniting of the right” of Con + UKIP vote.

problem with strategy was that it did not anticipate reaping equal & opposite response
In late May/early June 2017 it was pretty extraordinary to see this occurring in real time, on ground. It was there for everyone to see.

& yet last time there was no Con+UKIP arrangement or discussions. May just absorbed the UKIP vote. This time PM welcomes BXP standing aside

Just interviewed Chancellor - who argue the 0.3% number was “strong” and “solid” in international context. And slower performance down to uncertainty about Brexit not happening, and a Corbyn Government “sending us right back into recession”... - as you’d expect during GE campaign
Also - I put to him Bank of England assessment of Johnson Brexit deal - that it would lead to checks on customs “as a result trade flows are likely to fall and some companies might exit the market”

** Javid acknowledges “when we trade with the EU there will be some changes”
Full quote: “we will have our own custom territory & yes, as the UK when we trade with EU there will be some changes but it also means there's opportunities..to strike our own free trade agreements around the world, investments in freeports. there's a lot to look forward to”.

We'd heard in Westminster/Whitehall that it was definitely to be Osborne
It has raised eyebrows. UK, Treasury/Javid, asked for the extra time, a day, until Aug 2 in order to nominate. UK has backed the process of seeking a single European candidate from the start
If Downing Street waits until after the EU vote - which it will take part in (abstention counts as a vote against) - only then to nominate Osborne it will be a spanner in the works both in Brussels and Washington
