It’s unfortunate that the film and television industry’s resistance to diverse content has resulted in the expectation that every piece of diverse content that does get made speak for everyone in the underrepresented group on screen.

It need not, and it should not.
Each film need not represent everyone, but film culture in aggregate certainly should aspire to.
In conclusion, consider directing your frustration at the systems that perpetuate the scarcity and not the filmmakers whose decisions present only one perspective among multitudes that haven’t reached the screen, especially if you haven’t even seen the thing yet.
And yes, it is absolutely terrible that managing our response to films made my members of our communities is an additional burden that we in those communities must bear in order not to give cover to those who would be perfectly happy to not make those films at all.
But I am certain many of these conversations would be different if there were more films about these communities and/or historical realities than films about, let’s say, the Terminator (no disrespect to the Terminator. Great franchise. Classic character.)
