Among officers on list of problem cops Brooklyn DA disclosed: Leonard Clarke. “In 2015, he falsely arrested a man named Ronnie Sanders then lied that Sanders cursed at him & called him a pig. Video footage shows Sanders calmly watching as his friend got arrested.”
As expected, the NYPD Union attacked Brooklyn DA & defended lying cops: “It is clear that Brooklyn DA Gonzalez has abandoned his prosecutorial role. He sides w/ the criminals, not crime victims.” But: It is a crime to commit perjury. The victims are those cops wrongfully accuse.

Joe wants to maintain a rare, archaic system that has lead NY to have the second highest wrongful conviction rate in country. A system allowing prosecutors to withhold most evidence *until trial began.* Trial by ambush. Uninformed guilty pleas. Delayed trials. Gross injustice.
The truth: In NY, prosecutors don’t have to turn over most evidence till day of trial. So for the 97% whose cases resolve before trial, they’re making decisions in the dark without seeing much if anything. This will change in less than 2 months:

You can always count on @nypost to do the dirty work of pro-carceral forces. I pay less attention to who is writing their dangerous messages. Came across Julia after her 3rd article slamming $12 million that will be spent supporting struggling people instead of jailing them.
In her article, Julia raises the alarm on release of “900 jailbirds” & criminals—actual humans stuck on Rikers on misdemeanors & nonviolent felonies, too poor to purchase their freedom—who may get incentives on top of reminders to come to court. How dare NY spend money on them?

Gut wrenching. NYPD in subway surround woman selling churros. She’s crying. They’re telling her she stops or get arrested. Trying to talk to them in Spanish. Rolling their eyes at her. Lead out of station in cuffs. Cart taken away. This is police violence.

Yesterday, a woman with no prior criminal history is accused of taking $19 worth of merchandise from a store. She is arrested instead of given a citation at the scene. She has a $100 bond set. 1/4
Today, she is appointed a lawyer with @DefendShelbyCo The State of Tennessee agrees to dismiss her case in exchange for a $50 "donation" to charity. Being locked up, she doesn't have $50 on her. 2/4
Her attorney calls @JustCity901 and requests the help of the Memphis Community Bail Fund, which posts the $100 cash bond. The woman will be released today, likely come back to court in July with $50, and have her case dismissed and expunged from her record. 3/4

Four cases, all solved in the past month, with suspects who cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars and significant breaches of public trust.

The FACT is, since 2010/2011 and come 2019/2020, the Ministry of Justice budget will have been cut by 40%. Just think about that for a second. A 40% cut!!! See this wonderful article outlining the crisis...the full blown emergency:

Firstly, criminal defence solicitors in England and Wales have not recieved a pay increase since 1998. The silient killer in all of this is of course inflation.
