Many in tech are struggling with how to design & build more ethically. Here are a few simple ethics tests you can employ at any time for decisions large & small…
1. Universality Test: Would the world be a better place if everyone used X?
2. Kid Test: Would I let my kids use X? (replace "kids" with niece, younger sibling, etc where needed)
3. Headline Test: How would I feel about my decision if it was the headline story on my favorite website tomorrow?
4. Reciprocity Test: How would I feel to be on the receiving end of this decision?
Hint: These aren't new—they've been part of philosophy and ethics for centuries.
PS—There are, of course, many external roadblocks to making ethical choices, but these tests can help there as well by building a stronger argument: Headline Test → PR, Reciprocity Test → UX, Universality Test → Co. Mission
