Of course, I didn't expect a smooth pass but having completed my cycle, I felt there was little need for this interview. However, the gatekeepers are the only ones between me and revenge and I need their approval to cross over and get it started.
'This is your first.'
It wasn't a question. It was a statement but I responded nevertheless.
'Yes, it is.'
'May I see your palm?'
I knelt down and placed both palms on her frail knees. She turned them to face her and traced the lines on both palms gently with her index finger.
Suddenly, she stopped and gently pushed them off her knees.
' You have 8 chances. So you have to be careful in choosing your new pathway. A lost chance is a lost chance forever. No do over.'
When I said nothing, she pointed at a group of people to her left .
'Join them. From there you get to see many pathways. Some familiar, some not so familiar. Now you get to choose your destiny. So make it count.'
As I turned to leave, she grabbed my hand.
'Do you still have anger in you?'
I looked away and said nothing.
'Death comes to every human, although, with different faces. Yours was a brutal face but I see no need to hold on to a past life when you have a chance to live another.' She paused and glanced at the growing crowd to her left. Turning back to me, she patted my hands and said,
'Be kind to your new host.' Then she let me go.

Anyone who saw the woman would think she was in pain. Yes, she was - but it was not a physical pain. The pain she felt was that which stemmed from disappointment and betrayal.
She clutched her lower stomach as she quickly made her way to her car which she unlocked before
sliding in behind the steering wheel. Her phone beeped and a text message flashed on her screen.
'We are too old for this. It's the right thing for us.'
Tears filled her eyes as she slipped the phone into her handbag which sat on the passenger seat. She drove off.
When she got to the hospital, she picked her phone and dialed her husband again. She wanted to plead with him one last time. He picked her call and she spoke hurriedly.
'Mike, I don't want to do this. I understand that age isn't on our side.
What is so bad about having another child in our 50s?' She asked tearfully.
Mike's breath on the phone came in quick succession. Assumpta knew he was frustrated but was trying to rein it in.
'Assumpta, our last child is 18 years old. Do you think I have time for diapers and school run now? Also, how sure are we that you would survive child birth at your age? Remember how John's birth went. I almost lost you! 'Honey please,' She cut in. ' I am strong enough for this.
I'm mentally prepared for this. You will love him or her like…'
'I have no doubt that I will but I don't want this. Get it over with. Next week I will go get snipped so this mistake doesn't happen again. Please!' The call ended. He had cut it.
Just then the doctor came into the room and Assumpta quickly wiped off her tears. He was elderly and had a kind face.
'Good afternoon, Mrs Ajonikin.' He smiled at her, so she forced back a smile in return.
Suddenly all business, he flipped through the file in his hands.
'The tests says you are 18 weeks gone. Well, this is a D & E case considering how advanced you are...I mean the pregnancy. I know you are worried, but be rest assured it's a touch and go. You're in safe…'
A phone beeped.A startled Assumpta glanced at her phone and picked it up.
Realizing the doctor was silent, she offered an apology.
'Sorry. It's a text from my husband.'
The doctor nodded and said,' Carry on. I will meet you in the theatre in 5. Okay?'
' Okay,' Assumpta replied.
She watched him exit the door and quickly clicked on the text message
from her husband. Her heart raced as she hoped it would be a text saying he'd changed his mind about aborting the baby.
' Honey, when you are done, give me a call so I can come take you home. I don't want you driving after the procedure.
Junior will come pick up your car from the hospital later. I love you.'
Her heart sunk. A nurse walked in.
'Mrs Ajonikin, please come with me.'

Something was wrong. His host was doing something to her body - to his new vessel. Something was pushing and poking so he decided to take a look.
Wait! Wait! It wasn't yet time to be born. It wasn't yet 9 months so why were they pulling out his vessel.
He panicked as he watched his frail vessel being pulled out. Did he miss out something about his host when choosing this pathway? He had taken it in a hurry because he couldn't wait any longer. Why was his host doing this to herself?
Just when he was starting to merge his spirit into the flesh inside her...Why? Why? Why was she denying him a chance at life?
His first chance at reincarnation was going to be a failure. He was down to seven. This made him angry... and mad.
He tried to surge forward as the doctor pulled out the foetus into the light and immediately felt himself being zapped back into a void. He was going back to square one. In anger he struck and lashed out at his host before the gatekeepers pulled him back in completely.

'Doctor! LOOK! Something is wrong. She's haemorraging,' the nurse screamed in panic as Assumpta bled and went into shock.

As the doctor and his nurses tried to save Assumpta's life, her soul seeped out of her.
The spirit that was Assumpta, took one last sad look at the big clump of blood splattered in the tray which was on the table, before answering the call of her ancestors.
It was time to begin her own cycle.
Life depended on it.
