I see some tweets suggesting -

"We mustn't glorify people like Ramanand Sagar. Our epics are too great to be dependent on the work of a few Bollywood impresarios"

Sure. But every generation needs its popularizers. It's not a one time thing

Sagar / BRC did it for our age
You can't simply assume that the epics will be popularly understood for an indefinite time to come

Not a lot of common folk in the West are deeply familiar with the plots and subtle details of Iliad and Odyssey

Unlike in India, where the awareness is deep and wide
The transmission from grandmother to kids worked for many many generations

But that was in an agrarian age of deep rooted traditions, joint families, large families among other things

In our times it's a lot lot harder
So if epics like Ramayan and Mahabharat remain popular among masses in the year 2100 for instance, it will most likely be because of men like Ramanand, Chopra, Anant Pai, Rajaji

And that effort too can't be a one-time thing. But to be renewed in each generation
