@DBE_SA is it necessary and imperative for grade 4's 9/10 yr olds to see what a penis/testicles and vagina looks like at this stage? Many aren't even allowed by their culture or religion to be exposed to such imagery of the private parts of the opposite sex?
The whole HIV transmission section is a mess because you actually can't even broach that subject without explicitly saying it's a sexually transmitted disease and that means explaining the act of sex.
So that's how the department should know it's already overstepping its bounds and that some of this content is still age inappropriate and offensive to certain cultural and religious beliefs
It's reckless to give information that's not even necessary at this stage and leave big gaping holes of information out at that and without guidance the guidance that should be coming from parents in accordance with their own religious and cultural beliefs
This over exposing children to adult things is actually the problem.
There's a direct correlation to our children being over exposed to information beyond their years and them acting out inappropriately.
They don't need more exposure they need more guidance more protection they do not need to be burdened with adult things.
You are stoking fires you won't be able to put out. Children aren't exposed to everything at once because they lack the maturity to react appropriately to certain things giving a child a loaded gun and expecting them to be responsible with it is ridiculous
I can just see children wanting to compare body parts with this drawing because that's how children think now that they've been exposed to this they'll want to see the practical version angithi and how it compares
There was less teenage pregnancies 24 yrs ago and there were no condoms in schools or such textbooks -Why? Because children could just be children and there was a greater effort from adults to protect their physical emotional wellbeing as well as their innocence.
In fact the department should issue out written communication with a consent form so that parents can decide whether or not this is appropriate for their children and children shouldn't be forced into learning this by way of having to be tested because it's part of the curriculum
