My rebuttal to this is that it only really works in gubernatorial races, not senatorial ones.
Voters are more willing to consider you on your specifics if you're running for governor, where you have power as an individual.

In Senate races, people are not voting for you, they're voting for a Senate majority, so your individual cross-partisan beliefs matter less.
That is why Andy Beshear is going to be Kentucky's next governor, but Amy McGrath is probably not going to be Kentucky's next senator.

That is why Charlie Baker walked to an easy second term, but Scott Brown couldn't.
