no doubt the prime minister will have noticed the shift in the public mood, and the media, around climate change.

“climate and the environment” is literally top of mind.

morrison can implore us not to discuss climate change while the country is on fire, but as the fire chiefs have tried to tell him, we have months of fires ahead of us — this is the new normal.

unless australia gets a lucky break, this fire season is morrison’s "port arthur".

if @ScottMorrisonMP seeks to be a great PM, he needs to rapidly pivot to real #climate leadership — meaningful words and meaningful deeds.

to be meaningful:

1. morrison must explain to the public what the science tells us unequivocally — CO₂ emissions, mainly through the burning of fossil fuel, are driving the climate into a dangerous zone.

declare that

we are living in a human-induced #ClimateEmergency.

2. morrison must adopt a domestic emissions target that’s science-based and represents australia’s fair share.

(the independent climate change authority is best placed to develop apolitical targets.)

3. morrison must adopt a constructive international stance — go to #cop25madrid & explain that we're the canary in the coal mine.

show them that our people, our economy & our natural wonders are being hit hard by #ClimateChange.

lead a coalition of the willing, pressure others.

4. morrison must get the right team in place.

ditch the scandal-prone, divisive “minister for reducing emissions”. @AngusTaylorMP has no intention of reducing emissions and no credibility with industry, media & the public.

make a fresh start with a real climate change minister.

shirking this responsibility will lead to increased risk to australia — our people, our economy & our environment.

+1°C brings horrific consequences.

current global policies will deliver +3°C or more — an unbearable future for our kids.

time to step up @ScottMorrisonMP!
