English selectors "rested" the great George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes by dropping them for 1901-02 Ashes tour
Reason: They had exerted too much during 1901 season helping Yorkshire win the championship
Yorkshire management wanted them fresh for 1902 season!
This forced AC MacLaren the England captain (who was short on bowlers) to pick Sydney Barnes for the 1901-02 tour
It was Barnes's debut!
WIdely regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, bowler in cricket history
Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer "rested" from the 2021-22 Ashes tour as they have exerted heavily for Durham and Sussex during the summer, and the counties need them to be fresh for 2022 season
Nor is it strenuous!
Back in early 1900s, top cricketers played unto 25-30 games in a season - that's 80-90 days of cricket in 4 months
And even if one includes ODIs / T20s etc, the domestic season does not involve as many days of cricket as it did in say 1920
