Great cricket tidbit

English selectors "rested" the great George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes by dropping them for 1901-02 Ashes tour

Reason: They had exerted too much during 1901 season helping Yorkshire win the championship

Yorkshire management wanted them fresh for 1902 season!
Interestingly this "drop" of the two Yorkshire stars was engineered by England selector Lord Hawke (also very powerful in Yorkshire cricket)

This forced AC MacLaren the England captain (who was short on bowlers) to pick Sydney Barnes for the 1901-02 tour

It was Barnes's debut!
Barnes ofcourse went on to play 27 tests for England (off and on) taking 189 wickets at average of 16

WIdely regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, bowler in cricket history
Am trying to imagine a similar scenario today

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer "rested" from the 2021-22 Ashes tour as they have exerted heavily for Durham and Sussex during the summer, and the counties need them to be fresh for 2022 season
County cricket no longer has the pre-eminence it enjoyed 100 years ago

Nor is it strenuous!

Back in early 1900s, top cricketers played unto 25-30 games in a season - that's 80-90 days of cricket in 4 months
Today even regular county players play far less 3-day cricket..

And even if one includes ODIs / T20s etc, the domestic season does not involve as many days of cricket as it did in say 1920
