This is still pissing me off, so let's talk about how well Christian atheists "know their bible." This verse, the only one applicable to Judaism at all, is a very slanted translation. This is *not*, objectively, what the verse means.

1st point - the idea that Chava (that's Eve's actual Hebrew name, sorry it's hard to pronounce) is caused *pain* because it's all her fault. The Hebrew word translated as "pain" here is translated as "toil" in the next verse, talking about Adam. It's literally the same word.
The impact of the consequences are *literally the same*for each of them, but the translation says 'pain' for the woman and 'toil' for the man. That asymmetry is not in the Hebrew, it's in the translation. It was chosen to support the NT.
Next up: "your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you"

The verb translated as "rule over you" is 'mashal'. Which can mean to rule over, or to have mastery over. Or it can mean to be like, to be similar.
So it's either 'your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you' OR it's 'your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall be similar to you'. And then in the next verse it describes how Adam will be similarly made to toil.
And I want to be clear here that my less misogynist translation is not the way Jews have always read it and reasoned with it and Judaism has always been egalitarian. It has absolutely been interpreted as "rule over you", and used patriarchally.
But there's a reason we say the Torah has 70 faces. This idea that the text means what it means and you can treat a *translation* as authoritative is extraordinarily Christian. We can't even read the text *directly* with a single authoritative meaning that's not to be questioned.
So coming in and saying "hurr durr durr the text says what it says and you're fooling yourself if you think it can be progressive" is completely incompatible with the way we do religion, and you should probably be a little more specific with which religion you're talking about.
For clarity, the part circled in red is the verse we're discussing. Everything else on the page is commentary and analysis about that verse.
