This day marks the 120th jayanthi of Laxman Naik, tribal leader of Koraput&a great freedom fighter whose feats and exploits till today are unparalleled.He was a part of Tribal resistance movement&an integral part of freedom struggle& the heroic role played by many tribal leaders.
Laxman Naik was born in Tentuligumma of Malkangiri. He was with the Bhuyan clan.He battled courageous against the abusive Brits with an uncommon enthusiasm and intensity of a warrior.He was the very embodiment of grit,fortitude&strength 2 incalculable supporters & colleagues
He relinquished all his common luxuries and eventually was pulled in towards the National Movement, when the message of Congress Movement came to Koraput. He enrolled in the Indian National Congress. He got trained in physical activities and this made him physically tough.
He helped the tribals to battle against old and cruel practices like bonded labor&made the congress program highly popular in Koraput. The tribes of Koraput and its neighbours like Malkanagiri, Tentulipada acknowledged him as their hero and dedicated themselves 4 freedom struggle
He popularized Khadi and attempted to teach a feeling of solidarity among individuals for the freedom struggle. This made the tribals fearless and lead to many episodes of minor mutinies. The best eg is murdering of a sub-inspector when he removed a Congress flag while hoisting.
Laxman Naik took the charge of President of the Congress essential advisory group at Matili in Koraput in 1942. During the Quit India Movement 1942, Laxman Naik was designated to represent Matili.
He utilized ahimsa as a principle weapon against britishers and thus many called him "Gandhi of Malkangiri. The message of Quit India Movement spread like wildfire in the entire of Koraput.
Reacting to the call of Mahatma Gandhi, Nayak took a peaceful procession on 21 August 1942 before Mathili Police Station. The police fired at the demonstrators unpredictably, which executed forty and injured in excess of 200 individuals.
The govt implicated Nayak for murder and capital punishment was articulated on him on 13 November 1942.
On the day, Laxman Naik heroically walked towards the Gallows. He wished his last. ”If the sun is true, and so is the moon, it is then equally true that mother India shall be independent".He was hanged on 29 March 1943 in Berhampur Jail
Despite the fact that Laxman Naik didn't live to see free India, he remained engraved in the minds of a large number of individuals of India as the leader of leaders.
