It's baffling how many on the left explain over and over how Medicare for All will be a net benefit despite tax increases, but those very same people will angrily argue that @AndrewYang's $12k Freedom Dividend hurts the poor despite being a net benefit for them. Poverty is <$12k.
For the very same reason that you come out ahead if you pay $200/mo more in taxes but pay $500/mo less on private insurance expenses, you will come out ahead if your taxes go up $50/mo to pay for $1,000/mo. The MATH is very clear in both instances that you get more than you pay.
And please, I beg of you, if you consider yourself progressive, or even a full-blown socialist, before you talk shit about Yang's Freedom Dividend, make a point of asking some people living in extreme poverty. Also try & listen to those who have received a basic income. Research.
If you do, here's what you'll find: The safety net you think exists... it doesn't really. And for those it catches, it can be absolutely degrading and even damaging. Meanwhile, those who have received UBI, they feel freedom, security, trust, and power.

While stopped at a light today, I gave four quarters to a man on the corner. It's all the change I had on me. I felt bad giving so little. To him though, it was like I just gave him $100. I can only imagine if it was $1,000, every single month. It would be goddamn life-changing.
So please. Stop for a moment and think about the 13 million people in poverty who have fallen straight through our federal safety net. Think about those who earn too much to even qualify, but still live lives of extreme insecurity, paycheck to paycheck. Think about them with UBI.
The key letter in UBI is the U. It's a right of citizenship. No stigma. No work requirement. No forms. No limitations. No one to answer to. All replaced with absolute security and the knowledge that every month the absolute minimum is $1k instead of $0. It's life unconditionally.
