"Did Muhammad marry a 9 year old girl named Aisha?"

This is what a non-Muslim brother asked me a few days ago. The following is my response.

***THREAD***
The reason I'm replying to him in a thread instead of a DM, because in the space of the 3 days he asked me, two other non-Muslims coincidentally asked me the exact same question. After dealing with personal errands, I've decided to address this subject succinctly, and clearly.

1
Some ask this question out of genuine curiousity; why would I follow a man who supposedly married a child? Some sincere truth seekers: did this really happen? Some are ignorant and/or arrogant, use this subject to "destroy" Islam. And are just shy/hesitant to ask about it.

2
So, by the Will of the One True God, I shall attempt to tackle this issue. Anything correct I may say is due Allah, and anything incorrect is due my own errors.

3
When asked this, I thanked the questioner! Islam requires sincerity and knowledge in belief - blind and/or wrong following is not Islam. Not to keep you guys waiting, let's dive into the topic.

4
So, he asked me, "Did Muhammad marry a 9 year old girl named Aisha?" A quick answer to your question is no. For the detailed answer, please read on - thanks in advance.

5
The issue is NOT about age whether or not Aisha RAA (may Allah be pleased with her) was 9 or even 18, it's about a person claiming to be a Prophet who spread good teachings yet married a child...

6
The difficulty of this question is addressing each questioner according to their own understanding; some may be atheists, others Christians, Hindus, and even Muslims of weak faith and/or knowledge!

7
In the soundest of books after the final Book of Allah (the Quran), may He be exalted, namely the two Saheehs of al-Bukhaari and Muslim it was narrated from Aisha RAA via a number of isnaads (chains of narration), not by one isnaad only, as some ignorant people claim,

8
and it was narrated by the individual concerned herself, namely Aisha RAA, and is not something that someone else said about her, or the description of a historian or hadeeth scholar; rather it comes in the context of her speaking about herself RAA.

9
She - RAA - explicitly stated that she was married to the Prophet PBUH aged six, and marriage was consummated when she was aged nine.

"AHA! Your Prophet DID marry a child!"

No, he didn't... Be a sincere seeker and not an arrogant preacher.

10
Nowadays, you've got college students and graduates in their 20s whom aren't in anyway responsible to take care of their ownselves, let alone, cater for others and even start a family!

11
Now halve that age, and look throughout history, and you'll find those whom were aged 10 were independent seekers and preachers of knowledge, others were soldiers and battalion leaders, others were shepherds, others worked in trade, and others literally ruled as kings!

12
The question is, what defines an adult? The Merriam Webster and other dictionaries define an adult as: a fully developed and mature person. Another definition is that an adult is he/she who is grown to full size and strength.

13
Other definitions include that an adult is someone above 16, 18, or 21 (legal age depending on your location). Other definitions state to attend to the ordinary tasks required of a responsible adult.

14
So, you see, many attempts to define it, all pinpointing on one thing; adulthood has NOTHING to do with age; it's to do with physical and mental maturity, and ability to handle responsibilities - and that is how Islam defines puberty; it's not just physical.

15
In light of marriage, Islam is literally THE ONLY religion that obligates marriage to only one woman whom has reached the aged of puberty (physical and mental maturity). It is the only way of life with a Divine basis of morality that has remained Preserved without from error.

16
Let's take a look at countries where these nonMuslims asked me; U.S., UK, and India. What is the basis of their morality? They present it as if it's the Church and God's words, but in reality, they're purely secularists, and that only breeds chaos (but that's another thread).

17
These countries have marriage ages as low as 18 in India, 16 in the UK (7 up to 1893), and even 12 in the U.S. (and 7 in Delaware up till year 1880) - providing there is consent, which is another crucial marriage factor in Islam!

18
So, lemme get this straight, marriage is for those whom are mentally and physically mature, providing there is consent from the woman involved? All these seem to fit Aisha RAA so far.

19
Let's move on, shall we? If the questioner is an atheist, please do us a favour by not wasting our time claiming something is bad or not according to YOUR subjective judgement.

20
Mind the oxymoron but the brightest atheists CAN'T say homo/heterosexual sibling incest with each other and/or their parents is bad, as long as there is consent and protection! Some say if animals won't be hurt, then you can have "fun"! Disgusting "moral" stance, or lack of!

21
As for Hindus, you should take a good look at your scriptures first, and first count how many millions of gods you guys have, and what those gods did to little girls - in *adult* rated "verses"...

22
As for Jews and Christians, the bibles are plagued with incest, illegal and forced sexual activities on women and little girls - as young as THREE! I'm NOT saying it's ok AT ALL, but if we are to play this these games, turning the tables is the easiest thing to do...

23
We've briefly proven that Aisha RAA was NOT a little girl, and that she was a woman. She is considered of the greatest scholars of Islam, and with her consent in marriage, and that her father was her husband's best friend, her relationship with Prophet PBUH was very close,

24
that she learnt so many things about Islam, the companions would later go to her so she could teach them. She was wise, and evidently mentally mature, especially when fake rumours were spread against her honour, but Allah proved her innocence in the Quran.

25
But it's ironic that unlike sincere seekers, Islamophobes and arrogant preachers believe that that story of her marriage at her age did happen, because she said so herself in a hadeeth.

26
Well, if you're taking hadeeth as a reference, then you might as well skip the hypocrisy and take it all - that there is One True God, and He sent Prophets like Noah, Abraham, Moses, Christ son of Mary, and the last, Muhammad PBUH.

27
You should also believe that Prophet Muhammad PBUH married a *woman* called Aisha RAA whom was mentally and physically mature.

28
You cannot compare a girl aged 10 nowadays living in cold climates, to a another female of the same age living 1400 years ago in the middle of the desert... It's basic biology - age of puberty for the latter would generally be a LOT earlier.

29
Moreover, when the pagans and enemies of Islam would try to insult Prophet Muhammad PBUH, they would say that he's a poet, a sorcerer, and a madman. Ironically, they also knew him by the nickname they gave him; the honest, the trustworthy.

30
However, never did they call him a p@£do, or such dirty phrases. It was evident for the ENEMIES that he didn't do it for pleasure, since they even offered him many beautiful women, yet he declined… It was a perfect opportunity for them to bring Islam down, but they didn't…

31
Since relativism would get us no where, and since democracy isn't really democratic or optimal (different thread materials), a Divine set of guidelines can only be the answer and decider on whether or not something is good or bad, permissible or prohibited, applicable or not.

32
Since the Quran is *proven* to be the Preserved Words of the One True God it being His Last"Testament" (revelation) Revealed unto His Last Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and all of the former), we can conclude that we cannot be morally superior

33
[because of an issue that was raised in the last 100 years] than the Creator Whom to Him belongs All Knowledge; He is the Most Wise, only the arrogant can claim otherwise.
