Writing a little bit about the 1994 welfare "reform" act and I am reminded yet again that Bill Clinton really sucked and so did all the other white people who bought into culture war rhetoric during that awful era.
I maintain a huge difference between that terrible era and this terrible era is that in this terrible era, middle-class white people feel attacked and thus it is a crisis, whereas they mostly didn't care about the horrible things of the 80s and 90s.
Which is not to say that this era isn't scary and awful--it very much is--but there are way more continuities than disconnects between then and now, with the exception that new, powerful people also feel scared and outraged.
