I'm not an attorney or anything, but maybe if Elastic hadn't historically kept security features paid only / commingled free and paid code in the same repository + commits, they'd not find themselves in this position.

What's free and not isn't exactly clear-cut.
"We consider users of these as our community. As you consider your options, remember we have things to sell you" is my reading of their sign-off.
Look, I have friends at @elastic. They're good people, who do good things in the world. I'm not saying they're awful folks, but their employer is rapidly becoming something profoundly uncomfortable to the community.
That may have been articulately put. I *know* they're good people. Their employer isn't living up to what these amazing people are worthy of.
