This decision will enable countries affected by #Ebola outbreaks to have fast access to currently licensed Ebola vaccine and future licensed Ebola vaccines.
WHO supported this process by providing technical inputs, seeking policy recommendations from Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, estimating global vaccine demand, and mechanism for fair and equitable access to this and other #Ebola vaccines.

Today the @WHO Emergency Committee recommended that I declare the #Ebola outbreak in #DRC a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice. Now it's time for the international community to show solidarity with the people of DRC, not to isolate them.
I emphasize that @WHO does not recommend any restrictions on travel or trade, which rather than stopping #Ebola, can actually hamper the fight. We call on all countries, companies and individuals to support #DRC by respecting those recommendations.
A public health emergency of international concern is not for fundraising, it’s for preventing the spread of disease. @WHO is not aware of any donor that has withheld funding because the emergency had not been declared. But if that was the excuse, it can no longer be used.

A series of attacks disrupted #Ebola response activities in #DRC this week. Most operations have resumed, but unfortunately we expect that the disruptions and backlog in lab testing will result in a rise in the number of cases reported in the coming days.
When we cannot reach people, they do not get the chance to be vaccinated or to receive treatments if they fall ill. The tragedy is that we have the technical means to stop #Ebola, but until all parties halt attacks on the response, it will be very difficult to end this outbreak.
I am profoundly worried. The increased transmission rates raise the risk of #Ebola spreading in #DRC and to surrounding countries. A major surge in political & financial support from all national & international actors is urgently needed to help stop this outbreak.

Some extraordinary numbers from the #Ebola response. Since January, there have been:
— 119 separate attacks on Ebola response workers or operations.
— 42 direct attacks on health facilities.
— 85 health personnel injured or killed.

2. These numbers were released during a @WHO press conference in Geneva today. Lots of interesting info shared. Such as:
The #Ebola response team is currently tracking about 12,000 case contacts a day. That's a huge piece of work.
3. @WHO's @DrMikeRyan said the #Ebola vaccination effort is gearing up in North Kivu. The plan is to be administering 1000 doses a day — substantially more than they've been able to administer for most of March and April. Plans are in the works to add a 2nd vaccine.

#Ebola: +15 cases today. These cases were recorded on April 30; they bring the total for the month to a whopping 406 cases. That is more than the 2 previous worst months (March & January) combined. Let's dig a little further. 1/
2. Sources tell me none of the 14 cases were vaccinated. In the past 3 days 56 #Ebola cases have been reported. Only 1 was vaccinated, and late, I think. Vaccine refusal & the insecurity hampering vaccination efforts are really driving this outbreak now.
3. I compared January, which had lots of cases but when huge numbers of vaccine doses were given, to April. The comparison is telling. April had 2.5 times the number of #Ebola cases — but less vaccine was use. Of course January was before the major attacks on Ebola teams began.

Wondering why it's so hard to stop the North Kivu #Ebola outbreak? Today's update from @MinSanteRDC shares a story that neatly illustrates what the Ebola response teams face. Pull up a chair. It's a doozy. 1/
2. A woman from Katwa started to develop #Ebola symptoms. Her husband died of Ebola in Jan., so she must have known what was going on. She had refused to be vaccinated or to be monitored by the response. When she got sick, she fled to Bunia, a 6.5 hour drive away.
3. Don't know why Bunia, but she died from #Ebola there. Her family decided to take her corpse to Vuhovi, which I think is a little west of Butembo, to be buried with her husband. FYI: the corpse of a person who died from Ebola teams with viruses. Very dangerous to handle.
