JUST NOW: The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passes the UIGHUR Act, a bill to condemn the Chinese government for its mass internment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, with a vote of 406-1.
The bill would also enable Global Magnitsky Act sanctions on Chinese officials deemed responsible for the concentration camps and require the State Department to assemble a report on human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
The lone no vote was Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie.
Y’all, someone got in a vote at the very last second. FINAL VOTE was 407-1.
The Senate will need to vote on the House version of this bill before it goes to Trump’s desk, because the House made changes to the initial Senate-passed legislation before approving it tonight.

They write the NBA “should have anticipated the challenges of doing business in a country run by a repressive single party government—including by being prepared to stand in strong defense of the freedom of expression of its employees, players, and affiliates across the globe.”

Jamie Raskin is showing reporters some of what the State Department IG gave to committee staff today — more details soon
We are still trying to get clarity on exactly what this is.

The IG gave attendees an about 40-page packet of what Raskin describes as conspiracy theories & propaganda about Ukraine/Biden/etc that was addressed to SecState Pompeo.

Raskin says IG doesn’t know where it came from.
Raskin says it feels like an irrelevant distraction.

The Mexican explanation of Trump's claim that they agreed to buy more American agricultural products is... interesting.

"We don’t have a specific agreement on products of that nature," Foreign Minister Ebrard said this morning, per my colleague @AnneClaireCNN.
"The most important Mexican import, or one of the most important, are grains from the U.S. And in Mexico, 1.2 million jobs would be lost. So if the tariffs are applied it would be 5% so if it goes to 10% the impact would be greater," Ebrard told reporters.
"By not applying the tariffs, I’m assuming he’s calculating it would impulse economic growth and that would increase our imports, among them grains. That’s what I believe he’s referring to."

coincided w Russian conquest of Central Asia which led to establishment of Russian Turkestan
Since then, “East Turkestan” have been used interchangeably with “Chinese Turkistan” for #Xinjiang as a geographic term to mark it from ”West Turkestan” or “Russian Turkestan”

CLIP: I attended a talk at @UBC Vancouver by a Chinese official, Yu Jiantou of the @CDRF15, and asked him about detention camps in #Xinjiang. He defended the camps as “vocational training” and said China has different priorities when it comes to human rights. Story coming soon.

In above video, the moderator is UBC Institute of Asian Research fellow Evan Due. Due is a senior adviser to the Chinese government research foundation where Yu is Assistant Secretary General. UBC hasn’t answered questions on whether he was an appropriate choice for moderator.
