A friend of mine, one of the few American academic scholars of Southeast Asia to serve as an infantryman in Eye Corps at the height of the Vietnam war, sent me an astonishing video of a presentation he gave recently. I wrote about it here. claireberlinski.substack.com/p/mcnamaras-mo…
He's been researching the crash of a C-123 transport plane that took off from Chu Lai, Vietnam, on Dec 17, 1968. All but 9 of the 45 aboard perished, including a friend of his. He has recently spoken to survivors and found out more about the cause of the crash. It is appalling:
He believes the crash was caused by the incompetence of one of McNamara's so-called morons--one of the 300,000 mentally disabled men were drafted and used as cannon fodder to evade the political horror of ending student deferments or calling up the reserves.

This is excellent--really worth reading--on the loss of American administrative competence. I've thought often lately that all our debate about health care misses this point: tnsr.org/2019/09/to-reg…
We could attempt to import other better-performing countries' systems wholesale, but unless we have an equally competent administrative class, the effort is probably doomed.
This is the first piece I've seen that recognizes this as a massive problem, offers a plausible account of the history of the decline of this skill in the US, and suggests ways to rectify it. That has to be prefatory to any plan to use the government to change anything.

Let's start with the women's marathon. There were certainly a lot of DNFs. 28 in total. But that only tells a small part of the story. High attrition rates in these races is common: The men's marathon in Osaka '07 had 50% drop out, and the Olympics went ahead in Beijing 1yr later
Let's talk about those 28. I was told that not a single woman used an ice bath before the race (no-one in the walks who ice bathed to my knowledge dropped out, in fact most performed very well). Re-watching the race at the start only a couple athletes had cold towels etc...

I’m not convinced by the arguments I’ve seen by @JonHaidt and @glukianoff but decided I’d take a *listen* to the Coddling of the American Mind (only way to consume books with a 6 month old!). Following my enjoyment of @wgervais’ thread on ‘Sense and Nonsense’ gonna follow suit.
Might not work as well in audio format (no screenshots of the holy relic of printed text) but let’s see. For reference thanks to excessive podcasting and a general lack of free time I’m now listening to things at 1.8-2X speed. (Makes everyone sound stoned at normal speed.)
Introduction: Trip to Greece to visit a guru in a cave sounded very weird/suspicious, which makes perfect sense given that is (spoiler) just a parable to illustrate three modern and supposedly popular problematic axioms. Side note: Haidt is a decent voice actor.

Donald's 1st appearance, as a scene-stealing supporting actor in this Silly Symphony cartoon. He is paired w/Peter Pig, who will never have a role this good again. DD becomes an instant star, while Peter is demoted to background player
I think they know they have something here; they save Donald's intro for last, and give him a great entrance.

Also, WLH's singing voice is perfect, and Peter Pig's speaking voice is a true nightmare. You can feel his cartoon career ending the moment he opens his mouth.

so i won some lots at the art institute of seattle liquidation auction and the experience was not really what i expected
i have a lot of bitter feelings about "ebay vultures", my highly pejorative term for the people i've seen clearing out every single item at goodwill that might score more than $25 on ebay
i think i've posted about this before. while thrift stores and yard sales are not a replacement for a functioning economy, there was a time when they were at least an option for getting things you "can't afford"
