THREAD: Photos of this Claremont United Methodist Church nativity scene went viral over the past few days. It's the latest example in a trend of churches using the Christmas story to call attention to our nation's immigration and refugee policies. A few other prominent examples:
The first example that made national news was Christ Church Cathedral, an Episcopal church in Indianapolis from July 2018.
Fellowship Congregational Church, a UCC congregation in Tulsa followed suit in December 2018.
Fellowship Congregational Church also featured an immigration and refugee statement on their church sign -- another frequent tactic of churches in their public witness -- at the same time.
Old First Reformed United Church of Christ in Philadelphia also had a similar nativity scene in December 2018.
And up in the Boston area, St. Susanna Catholic Parish in Dedham, MA made national news with this Nativity scene.
Here's a closer look at the baby Jesus locked inside a cage at St. Susanna Parish.
And it's not just churches that normally have Nativity scenes. Christian families often have their own as well. This Austin family made a statement with theirs in December 2018.
